I can't see why any team would trade a comparable player with more term and an acceptable cap hit for a player with one year left before UFA.

If its less cap hit and more term, the player is certainly going to be not as good.

Historically, this statement is most often true.
As such, it has become somewhat of a leverage mechanism for players.
Because the player hasn't said that.
And there are multiple case of player signing in season (even though they said they wouldn't negotiate during the season) OR after the season is complete.

“Most often true”. No, I don’t think so.

- Players request trades.
- GMs do stupid things all the time.
- Teams may have an imbalance of forwards to defence.
- Teams may get word that Weegar would be open to signing there long term.
- Teams may be under the illusion that Weegar would be open to signing there long term.
- Teams may be looking to move on from a player for various reasons even though they're good and think highly of Weegar.
- It's part of the process to do all of your due dilligence as GM.

From the article...

Quote:
“Mack is the ultimate team guy, and once the season starts he does not want to be a distraction, and doesn’t want to be dealing with this in the media room,” his agent/uncle Matthew Ebbs told Sportsnet from his law firm in Ottawa.

“That’s why our preference is if we can get something done before the season, that’s definitely where our head is at.

“If we can’t, we’re not saying we won’t have any discussions, but we’d prefer to just leave it so there are no team distractions after Oct. 13.”
Quote:
“I said, ‘you have to at least meet Darryl (Sutter), and it was all great,” said Ebbs.

“I don’t have to mince words, Brad, and the city, and his teammates and everyone and everything has been phenomenal.

“He sees this trade as a blessing in disguise.

“It is just about the numbers at this point. We have a range in mind, and I think we’ve addressed that very clearly, so I certainly think, to a certain extent, the ball is in their court.”
Quote:
“It just comes down to Brad and the organization and our side coming down to terms on a deal that’s good for both sides,” said Weegar, whose final year of his current deal has a $3.25 million AAV.

“I want a long-term deal here. Being here, the guys have been great and the city is very warm and welcoming.

“(Nazem) Kadri was a big free agent signing — he chose to come here before he even knew the city.

“My best buddy Huby, I’d love to spend another five, six, seven, eight years here with him.

“I believe he’s the kind of guy who can take you deep, same with Naz.

“I think all the pieces are here to be a successful team for years to come.”

The wording of that last part makes me think they're just down to figuring out the length of the term and the dollar figures that work for each term.

It sounds like BT froze them out a bit and is having them negotiate against themselves. I think we're going to be very happy with this number.

Hence the pressure leaks from Weegar's side in the media. Probably down to to the last 500k per year or something.

Weegar is an excellent defenceman who should be a cornerstone of this team for years to come. Git 'r done.

Didn't see a lot of weegar last night but what we did see was impressive . The puck gets up the ice when he's out there. He passes and moves the puck effectively and made the most of his great setup from Kadri. Simple and effective game

And two or three examples of him being a zone entry prevention guy. Hugely active sticks and body positioning.

3 days after Friedman says he won't negotiate in season we get this gush fest? Uncle Ebbs tried a move, didn't get a bite and came back to the flames with a "range" and it's now "in (BT's) court".

Sure feels like a walk back piece after a little hard ball didn't go their way.

The pace of play resulting with the puck out of our zone with the pairing of Weegar and Tanev is going to be fantastic to watch this season.

I dunno, I think you’re filling in a lot of blanks to make it seem that way. You could also say this is more tactics from Ebbs, getting the fans to think Tre is the only hold up to a deal… but in reality, there is no way to know. The only thing I gleaned from that is it seems like everyone is on board for a long contract and they are still hammering out details. Doesn’t sound like any tactics are being used on either side to drive up/down the price.
