I mean when you have 12 and 34 as well as prime 28 you try to go for it every year. Sutter didnt hang on to his 1st round picks ill give you that, but how well has that worked out us for the last 8 years under Brads watch?

I'd argue Brad is doing the same thing right now.

Sutter in my opinion was a great GM. Id wager the last 2 weeks of Brad is 5x worse then anything Sutter ever did.

Kotalik
Phaneuf trade.

Sutter played GM like he was still the coach, just trying to win right now. There was never any future, it was all about winning now.

Say what you will about Sutter the GM, but he built a contender that actually played in the Stanley Cup final, and if not for the phantom goal, would have won the cup.

Mainly because he traded for Kipper.
That was the X-factor.
Changed everything.

I would rather get 8 years of Gaudreau and have him leave for nothing than do what Sutter did with Phaneuf and first overpay him, then also get a terrible trade return for him.

IIRC it wasn't even Kipper he wanted.
Had to settle for him after they wouldn't give Toskala I think?

Sutter did hang on to his first round picks (only trading 1 out of 8) whereas Brad has gassed 3 out of 9. It was second round picks that Darryl got rid of.

So is there another shoe left to drop?
My feeling is since we also picked up Weegar that we’ll be moving a D man for a top 6 forward. Or potentially bringing Kadri into the fold.
Still feels like there’s one more move coming.

I think adding another forward depends on what they think of Monahan/Toffoli/Pelletier
Do they wait to see how Mony bounces back?
What does a full year of Toffoli bring?
Does Pelletier graduate and bring some offense with him?
It also depends on the cost to move Lucic, if there is one. Maybe they were willing to pay that price in order to fit Gaudreau and Tkachuks new deals in, but now they don't have to.
They might just go with what they have and see how it looks, they can always add later on if need be while they bank cap space through the season.
You have to remember that they also just added another offense driving top pairing D that they didn't have last year.

Next move should be to extend Huberdeau and Weegar or trade them.

Huberdeau Lindholm Mangiapane
Dube Monahan Toffoli
Pelletier Backlund Coleman
Rooney Ruzicka Phillips
Lewis
Hanifin Anderson
Kylington Tanev
Zadorov Weegar
Mackey
The only thing that I could see still happening is Lucic going to Arizona. I'd actually be happy having him in the place of Rooney, but once Rooney and Lewis were signed, I don't know what the plan would be, other than playing a bunch of old guys instead of Phillips.
If Phillips doesn't get a real chance this season, then I'll be happy for him when he is picked up on waivers by another team.
You can honestly run three defensive pairings with equal minutes, with that lineup. I could see Sutter loving that.
