Sure. Make a joke about starring in the next GI Jane movie to the next bald woman you encounter. I am sure that will go over well with everyone.

Dude, you're so far off the mark. This was a professional setting in front of a huge crowd and televised around the world, Chris Rock is a comedian doing his job and telling a very tame joke. Rock sure as hell wasn't expecting Smith to actually hit him, he assumed it was some playful bit where Smith was walking up to pretend to hit him or say something to him in jest.
I swear, this conspiracy #### has people going a few levels deep on everything and perceiving things in really strange ways.

Processing a possibility isn't the same as preparing yourself for an inevitable assault.
We won a hockey game. I knew the other team would naturally be upset, but I didn't expect another adult to give me a forearm shiver. I still don't understand how I should have responded.
Chris Rock should have zero anticipation or expectation to getting slapped live on international television. His reaction to that rings true to my experience and a layered understanding of context.
I don't think it was a work.

I mean, there’s a difference between going up to someone on the street and a professional comedian making a joke about a famous celebrity during a set.

I dunno man...I think most people would probably think that straight-up public assault is a little extreme for a 'bald joke.'
From a comedian doing a set no less.
The average person would likely be much more chill than that.
But then again, hey, its the Oscars...you couldnt find an 'average person' within 100 Miles of that place.

I seriously doubt any average woman who lost their hair would be chill with a joke about it.
I don’t think anybody needs to be slapped, but if Smith felt strongly enough about it he should have just gone up there and given him a talking to.

Sure, but this is an event for millionaires to pat each other on the back.
Sorry, it all seems rather staged to me.
If it was actually off-side they could have dealt with this in a more mature way. If everyone Chris Rock offended slapped him for it then we'd be living in a very different world.
I mean...its a room full of people who are publicly viewed and criticized for a living. A very good living.
Whatever. They got their ratings. Slurp the gruel.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. I had nothing outside of normal gameplay interaction with that player until the post-game handshake.
Anyway, here's a more comprehensive video with the lead-up to the slap, with the joke in question and both Smiths' initial reactions.

His wife doesnt seem at all taken aback by anything, unlike any woman I have ever seen in that kind of situation, Rock comes back with the 'wow' as soon as Smith slaps him, not 'chill man back off' or 'dude wtf?' no 'wow, will smith just slapped the *** out of me' the more I see it the more fake it looks

I'm no longer interested in the incident anymore, rather completely engrossed by the few posters who think this was a conspiracy or wrestling style work.
What other aspects of entertainment or life do you get completely wrong?
Reminds me when photoshopping first started popping up on the internet, a few people got tricked then forever more tried to be the smart guy by proclaiming "fake" at everything they saw.

Everything about the guy is phony. From turning down The Basketball Diaries because he was worried about how a gay role would impact his career, to his music, to his persona.

Let's be fair, 90s-early 00s Will Smith was great. Awesome. Role model for many, and rightfully so.
Middle aged, family man Will Smith? That's a different story.
"You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain" really rings true here.
With dying implying moving on from acting before it caught up to you in some way.

What about the footage from the commercial break where he's being consoled and looks emotional.
Honestly it's hard to say. But also professional bullshirting is what they do. And everything hinges on eyeballs and clicks with these events.

Here's a fuller video, as it's available ATM.

Jada looks perturbed. Will seems amused, though it's possible he's seething. Either way, that's a pretty soft joke even taking Jada's health into consideration. Factoring in Rock's history with his documentary he knew how to craft the joke.
Chris' reaction when Will starts to get up, even half calling him "Richard" and chuckling, makes it seem he's expecting Will to come up and give an impromptu scolding for the cameras. Instead he smacked the #### out of him, and if you watch Chris' right hand you almost see him at the seeds of return fire. The following dialogue is either natural, or the worst scripted #### Smith has produced, which is to say something.
I've fallen for lesser #### before, but that feels genuine. Especially when Rock stumbles through the teleprompter script afterwards. Guy is shook up.

Denzel is being a family friend and trying to support them. Will Smith then spends a lot of time talking to his publicist. I bet his PR team was instantly coaching/crafting the speech where he fails to acknowledge the incident or apologize to Chris Rock and admit any wrong-doing/criminal liability.
If Chris Rock had made a joke about Jada's baldness meaning she wouldn't have any more "entanglements" (previously used to describe their awkward open marriage) Will might have killed him.
Combined with the fact that he laughed at the joke and did a 1080 degree turn once he caught his wife's glare, this relationship seems pretty toxic and Will is a lot less stable than most people assume...Or you know, it could be all the scientology sessions.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but Chris Rock has gone after them before when he hosted the Oscars a few years back and she boycotted because of the “lack of diversity”.
His monologue was funny. He joked how can you boycott something you’re not even invited to? He said something like Jada Smith boycotting the Oscars was like him boycotting Rhianna’s after party.

These are some incredibly thin skinned multi-millionaire celebrities here. That's like 10% the hitting power of a Gervais awards ceremony joke.
The punchline was it was like Chris Rock boycotting Rhianna's panties - - - because he wasn't invited. The joke was that Jada can't boycott an event she's not invited to.
Celebrities, especially Hollywood Royalty like the Smith family are inevitably going to be involved in jokes because jokes rely on a shared point of reference. You need to make jokes about high profile people so that most people will get the joke in the first place.
