It's like JBo - on a really good team like the Blues where they're big and strong defensively, JBo will be fine. On a team like the Flames, the guy is a liability. This is like Hanifin - more stay-at-home type. He's been playing well most of this season but there are still times where he's just out of position. Should he be in the top D-pairing with Andersson? He's probably like what we've said - top 4 - best with Tanev. But the way Sutter has his D-pairing, he's got an offensive and defensive mix for each pair on every line. So, as I've said before, you can't really interchange Kylington and Hanifin.

I just think sometimes a fan can just fixate on a player (good and bad) and only see what they want to see.
Hanifin's numbers for the last two years are more than solid despite changing defense partners.
League rankings for the last two years ...
CA60 24th
CF% 15th
xGA60 28th
xGF% 13th
HDCA60 18th
HDCF% 17th
You can't be top 30 across the big defensive measures AND the overall splits without doing a heck of a job in your own end and in transition.
Glad they didn't deal him for Hall!

The Flames paid a massive price for Hamonic and he was brought in to be a 2b Dman on what would be an absolute steal of a contract at $3.83M. It is debatable he even lived up to that cap number when he was here and could only secure a $3M payday this past offseason.

Hindsight I think everyone can agree that it is too bad that the Flames won the bidding war over Hamonic.

Hamonic while solid in his own zone at times was terribly overrated. By the time he got to Calgary. He derailed Brodie. Then the following year was slightly better. The fact he quit on the flames for health reasons yet fought the vaccine later tells me all I need to know about him.

While I don't think he's a bad guy, he was dumb as nails to bail on his team in an isolated bubble which was better protected than the outside world given that he was willing to expose himself later unvaxxed I gather and risk compromising his kid's health anyways, preventing which was the whole point of opting out of the bubble. In the process sinks his reputation with both former teams.

Article in the fourth period today discussing how 40pt Dman Noah Dobson (player chosen with the Flames 1st rounder in the Hamonic deal) is a budding superstar.
Not many deals I hate more in hindsight than the Hamonic trade in 2017.

In hindsight it was a bad deal sure, but if the Flames have that pick, they aren't necessarily picking Dobson.

True but Dobson was one of those guys who was sliding down the draft and was top 10 in many of the mock drafts so seemed like an easy choice at the time for the Islanders.

Who else are you supposed to use as a "what if" when discussing the trade. Dobson is just the logical choice.

looked up Dobson's stats and they're looking studly this year, plus great size to boot.

Heh, well then we'd have the big problem of affording Dobson's raise this year, whereas Hamonic's AAV is long gone from our books.

Yeah I wouldn’t have minded the Hamonic trade if he didn’t absolutely suck at hockey for most of his tenure here. Don’t know how he’s still in the league. Awful, awful hockey player.

Hindsight is 20/20. At the time those were both looked at as killer acquisitions.

Truly awful.
I remember watching James Neal in the first couple preseason games of the 18-19 season and I said to myself, we’re in trouble. Hated him all season long, not one good stretch. It was astounding to me that he could con NHL teams into thinking he was worth more than a million bucks. Slow, lazy, no hockey sense, terrible mobility, couldn’t pivot, couldn’t turn, couldn’t take a pass in stride, handled the puck like a grenade, muffin shots, bad attitude, indifferent in his end of the ice. Just a completely useless plug. Thank goodness the Flames got Lucic out of James “Bad Deal” Neal. Looch’s terrible contract may still haunt the Flames today, but at least he doesn’t hurt the team.
Don’t have quite the same disdain for the Hamonic trade. But I do remember giving the stink eye to the acquisition price. Very expensive at the time of the trade and even more expensive now that we can look bad at it. Good community guy, plenty of intangibles, but not worth the cap hit or the assets. He was a pretty mediocre oft-injured #4 defenseman. I will say, Dobson and Kyrou would look great in Flames colors today.

Not sure what you’re referring to. If you look at the threads on this forum when both players were signed/acquired they were overwhelmingly positive. Especially Neal.

Yeah I guess others have a much sharper eye for talent because I was super high on Neal.
