Man I’m happy for Gio and his family, the guy gutted it out to make it to 1000 games and be a Norris trophy winner in this league and we had the privilege to watch much of that. Have fun with Brodie! Makes sense why we couldn’t get Gio and I admit to selfishly wanting to see it happen much like Iggy haha, great to see him go out east.

My hockey brain said no to him coming back. I think this was the next best option for him. I bet he's excited. He deserved better than Seattle.

Hope the Leafs see a couple rounds including a big goal or two for the ol' captain. Beyond that, they can crash and burn because it's still Toronto.

My money would be on 55 though.
He wore 46 for the Flames as a rookie. But my vote would be for 56, as a companion to Brodie’s ridiculous 78.

Humour me here; when Zad leaves as a UFA next year, and maybe Gudbranson too, would it be terrible to have Gio playing 3rd pair minutes mentoring Mackey and Valimaki in rotation?

If Gio is up for a sunset contract of 2 x 2.5, I’d do it.

Haha, I'm surprised the league has this rule in place while teams like the Lightnings and now the Panthers are taking full advantage of circumventing the cap issues with LTIR!

My concern would be how the re-addition of Giordano affects the current leasership group. I think it would be awkward for players like Gaudreau, Lindholm, Tkachuk, Hanifin and Andersson who have emerged in his absence, having never known anything else while he was here.

Good for Gio, I hope he and the Leafs do well. A Flames-Leafs final would be absolutely glorious.
I'm just glad they never won the Cup after that trade had happened. I hated the Leafs then and I still hate them to this day. They'll be lucky to get out of the first round and for sure they won't survive the second round with their goaltending issues. Glad we got the best years out of Gio. It's really too bad Sutter wasn't here years earlier after the rebuild.

Now that we all know Gio's gonna retire as a Leafs, Sutter might as well name the new Captain of the Flames going into the playoffs. At this point it should either be Lindholm or Andersson.

Exactly what I was thinking. It would be pretty simple. Teams need to honor the salary cap in the playoffs. If they want to play a player that was on LTIR they can but they need to still stay under the cap. Either play with a short bench or replace players not as good but taking up a good chunk of cap with cheap AHLers.

Since these players are presumably injured, there is no circumvention.

Well, that's not going to happen.

There’s over a 95% chance Toronto is playing Carolina, Tampa or Florida in round 1 and I don’t expect them to beat any of them.

Tampa is less impressive this season due to the loss of depth. I'd give them a chance.

Wouldn't be a Blue Jackets upset, but maybe in 6-7 hard fought games.

Carolina and Florida are the best and most complete teams in the east.

I will pass
I mean if it a happened I would cheer for him but I think its time to move on

He probably stays with the Leafs anyway, likely a bigger role there than he would have here

Tampa has struggled a bit lately but they aren't giving 110, they know how to turn it up. Rest of those teams haven't won a damn thing. Leafs and Panthers have the longest streaks of not winning a playoff series in the league.

Goaltending favors Tampa in any series, especially vs. the Leafs

I doubt it. The man may be a Norris winner, but he has failed to break meaningful records or lead his teams beyond the first round.
