From time to time I've stood back and marveled at just how strange it is that we refer to players primarily as their surnames in sports.

I realize that in real life, say hanging out casually, that it would be weird to do. Really weird.

Which is why the first name thing with some coaches doesn't surprise me at all.

I wouldn't want people I play with calling me by my last name. I'd cringe.

I care much less what she is saying than when she is saying it. If the play is on, STOP TALKING so the guy whose job it is to describe the play, you know the PLAY-BY-PLAY guy, can do his job. Get back to your riveting anecdote at the next break in the action.

We're not exactly hanging out with the players, are we? Seems more appropriate to call them by the names on their jerseys.
