Given that the team is why I watch hockey, my angle is a little different. If the wheels fall off I won't be watching much hockey at all. But it is nice to have, with the clean slate of a new, full-length season with fans in the buildings.
Here's hoping interest is still high in a few months.

Just a feeling.
I didn't think he was great last year, and I haven't been all that impressed in pre-season, though that doesn't mean much.
Hope I'm wrong

Fair enough.
He did lead the entire league in shots this preseason, must be doing something half right.

He's trying, but I suspect will continue to miss his share of half empty nets. It's kind of his thing.

Lol this is also my biggest gripe with Backlund as he seems to miss the net on big chances at a prolific rate. Could be a bias but he does it all. the. time.

My dad only half watches the games these days, and the names often elude him and even he remarked at Thanksgiving how 'that Backlund guy always misses tap ins'.

Yeah Backlund leads the league in missed glorious chances...could give McDavid a run in the scoring race but nah

I'm clearly in the minority but I'm excited about this roster and the direction management went this offseason.
I like how the bottom of the roster was rebuilt and I like the size and grit that was added. I think more than in past years the bottom of the roster will impact the game positively and it looks like the team has a clear identity and we've abandoned the "blend team" concept.
On the whole, the offence and goaltending look better. The D is clearly not as good without Gio but I think they will be serviceable and insulated by Sutter's system.
This team could really use an Eichel (who couldn't really) but as currently constructed I still feel the team is playoff bound and will be more competitive than any year in the Gaudreau era. If we're not, I'll enjoy the ride anyway. For me the best part about watching the Flames is the ups and downs that add to the entertainment of the season.

The team seems to have more of an Identity this season, with the size and defensive focus.
That said, the Flames will win or lose on Tkachuk and Garneau's stick. Likewise, Markstrom will play a huge roll.
If any of those three players struggle the Flames will be in big trouble.

Was it in the last preseason game that they rolled out a trio of Lucic, Richardson and Ritchie? I found myself actually quite pleasantly surprised by that line.

Garneau specifically will be tough to count on, so looks like we're hooped.

Still no Pitlick at practice. I suspect we'll see Duehr in the lineup on Saturday.
