McDavid has 5 years left; Drai 4. They should be mortgaging their future to go all in and get good players to play with McDrai for the next 4 years. Use all your 2025+ picks and cap space to win now. If you don't, McDavid/Drai will leave and you will have wasted your golden ticket. That should be the plan, and them acting within that plan makes a lot of sense.

They've already wasted 6 years of McDavid having him play with no-talent sucks like Neal, Chiasson, Kassian, Archibald. On the back end, their best players have been Kris Russell, Klefbom, Sekera, and Larsson. That's a lot of suck.

This deal is a big overpay, but a) they need good players on their team now. b) the worst part of the contract will be in years 4+. This reasoning also shows why the Hyman signing is smart for them. Ceci is terrible though.
If they need good players on their team now they shouldn’t be giving Nurse 9.25. He’s not that good of a player and now it ensures they have no room to add any other “good” players.

My god, this is absolutely tremendous!

Nurse, this past season, was top pairing offensively, and 3rd pairing defensively. His numbers were elevated from an insanely hot PP, a really soft schedule (especially getting 4 games against OTT early when their goalies couldn't stop a beach ball, and (most importantly), a lot of luck with an unsustainable shooting percentage.

After having the year he had, getting $6+ was probably a given.

But they gave him $9+!! Nine and a quarter million effing dollars!!!

LOL!!!

Holland is threatening to unseed Chiapet as the greatest GM in Oiler history.

Ah I see. So Holland wants to be fired and be yet another ex-Oiler being paid to not work for them.

Shrewd. Shrewd move Kenny.

I agree with you. Holland's basically throwing all his hopes into the next 4 years. He doesn't care about long term down the road. His mandate is probably to try to get the team competitive until their window closes and both McDavid and Draisaitl are gone.

It wouldn't be a bad strategy if the Oilers were actually built properly around McDavid. But alas, that team is such a tire fire mess, it's hilarious to watch them piss away cap space to overpay for mediocre talent.

Nurse is a 2nd pairing dman that overachieved last year because of the weak North division competition. I bet he becomes the new Oilers whipping boy in a couple of years.

I'm guessing the plan is to let Draisaitl walk as McDavid has the extra year, and then liquidate McDavid in the summer before his final season in Edmonton.

So 58M over the first 5 years all with a complete NMC.

That is some seriously good work by his agents.

On the same day Lamoriello signs an arguably better d-man to 8 x $5.75m. Classic. Absolutely classic.

Like "Stalin liquidate"? Pretty ruthless, but perhaps that is what you have to do...

You only have six players on the ice, that leaves 50M for the other 3.

Icing on the cake of what's been a really bad offseason for NHL GM's. Way too many overpayments for non-elite players in an era where the salary cap will remain flat for some time.

IMO the goaltending and D isn't even close to cup contending. Smith comes back to earth and they are a bubble team.
They wont even be able to afford a new Hip for Smith.

Hard to believe the player and the agent are both that dumb.

It's also one year delayed, so that will help push the escrow payments down to the the cheaper years, but with that delay, they could have saved Nurse so much more.

On second thought: with the time value of money factored in and inflation on the rise because of our governments mismanagement of the economy and COVID - it may not matter much
