Sure they can. They can't afford him on the roster, but they can pay him as much money as they like as long as he doesn't play for them. Anyway, why the hell would they want him to play?

Serious question - was there ever a worse player on Calgary?


Take a look at Neal's 7 goals that season - all of them were basically flukes.



His metrics showed that he brought down EVERY player he played with, no? I remember Peters would throw him up with Gaudreau and Monahan (while they were still really lighting it up) after every PK, but that line produced absolutely nothing with him on it.


He didn't play defence. He couldn't pass. He didn't play physical. Then he goes and complains about his ice time during the playoffs in front of all his teammates?



Even McDavid stopped being able to bounce some pucks off his rear. Neal is the worst player that I ever remember playing for the Flames, and I have been watching this team since the early 80's when they moved to Calgary.



I would be shocked if he gets a PTO - and if he does, that's all he will get.

I had a theory he had suffered a concussion in the prior year's playoffs and was still getting symptoms but had hidden it to sign a big contract. Not saying I'm right, but that's how bad he was. Bad enough that I convinced myself something like this was what was happening.

…And in another two years, Lucic will be off the books, the Oilers will still be paying Neal's buyout for two years, and Whynot and Beck will be turning pro. We shall see who's winning then.
