Seattle being extremely careful with their cap. Gio, Eberle and Gourde the only contracts above $5M. I can see them being a cap savior for a few teams, but sending basically nothing in return for the favour. If they are willing to eat one or two toxic contracts, they could easily end up with multiple firsts in the next two years, and it wouldn't really negatively effect the on-ice product too much.

Will see how side deals and UFA signings go. Maybe they sign both Hamilton and Jones lol

Once they sign the RFA's and UFA's they've selected they're going to be over $70 million in cap.

They don't have a ton of wiggle room. When I see that it makes sense why they steered clear of guys like JVR, Tarasenko, Voracek, Duchene and Johansen.

Remember only 23 guys on the roster, too. Some of these players are going to be moved for prospects, or be top line on the AHL team. That chalks up another 5M or so to play with in cap money.

If many teams are already tight, wont that make it difficult for Seattle to simply unload a bunch of contracts they are compiling?

They don’t have any bad contracts (except for tanev I guess) so any players that they trade should have some value and they also have the flexibility to retain salary to increase the value if they want to.

Not sure why you'd think that. The picks had to be in this morning; just not announced until tonight.

The fact that Detroit's pick wasn't leaked until after Cholowski was notified, suggests the leaks come from other sources than the league.

Almost certainly coming from the players' agents.

Francis calls player/agent --> Agent texts "insider" --> Insider tweets it

Plus it explains why the trades have not been announced. The players that are picked will only know that they have been picked… not that a trade has gone down that has lead to them being picked instead of someone else.

I know it's a courtesy to let a player know they're on the move. But this just kills the expansion draft interest. An exception should have been made to not have to disclose to the players until draft time. Assume this is the PA preference ruining everyone else's fun.

I’m so out of touch. An incomplete list of players I’ve legit never heard of: Appleton, True, Geekie, Twarynski, Bastian, Lind, Soucy, Borgen, Daccord, Beyruthier…

I feel like Skinner, where’s Danny Heatley playing these days?
