What makes people think Gaudreau and Tkachuks next contracts aren’t going to be tough ones to sign?
Nuge and schenn at 28 signed for reasonable cap hits but got the 8 years expiring at 36 or 37 age range. Anyone think Johnny won’t be doing the same think is wrong. If we don’t give him 8 years it will be 9 per or 7.5 for 8 years. He probably will hold out for the 8 years to get the extra 15 mil. Does anyone realize that all teams know this? Good luck signing him to exactly what your comfortable with
Tkachuk too. I was optimistic that he would be reasonable until rumours come out he wants out. Good luck getting him to ink for a good contract. Maybe the blues can but we aren’t

Switch the 2nd to a first and it’s not bad. Some people need to realize Tkachuk contract is a bad one as well.

I wouldn’t take 7 years of Schenn over 2 years of Monahan. One for one I hate that deal.
Schenn is not there yet but I don’t think he is worth his cap hit today so I have no idea how he is going to continue to justify that deal as he gets older?
It is not a Lucic level deal at this stage but has all the ingredients to become one

Do you honestly think that there is any chance they let Tkachuk walk as a UFA?
I actually don’t even understand what you’re saying… did you read my post?

Johnny’s game will age significantly better than Schenn or Nuge in my opinion. I gladly give Tkachuk 8 years when his deal expires at 24 years old.
Let the Flames sign their own players to those deals like the did with Gio and Backlund and let’s avoid taking someone else’s mistake for our young superstar.

Will it? If Johnny slows down even a little bit at all its over. I feel he is going to need to adopt Gios's fitness regimen just to keep up moving forward. Can he do that?

I highly doubt he'll get 10 mill AAV under any circumstances.
However, I would be willing to bet that he puts up great numbers during contract years.

Schenn has played much better than monahan has over the last 2 seasons. Monahan is also having hip surgery where schenn played every game this year
Monahan is a better goal scorer but schenn is faster and plays more physical. He also has less injury concerns. He’s the better player right now but I would want some compensation for his contract. But to say it’s lucic bad and fail to acknowledge monahans issues seems a bit bias

Zero chance, if they have control. But maybe they already know his intentions? Maybe he has already stated that he will playout this contract and only sign the qualifying offer for a one year contract to reach free agency the quickest way possible. This may have been stated to them already and now they have to find a way to manage this right.

I read your post. You're making the assumption the team has the control. Because of the way this contract was structured, and the qualifying number being what it is, the player holds most of the cards. The one card the team holds is the ability to trade him anywhere. If Tkachuk's camp has stated they will play this contract out and sign only the one year deal, Treliving must be feeling quite the bit of discomfort at the moment.

Yup, and all of this started with me responding to someone saying he’s going to walk as a UFA. They do have control, for 2 more seasons. Sure it’s uncomfortable if he wants the qualifying offer. But he’s still under team control and can be dealt anywhere.

The likelihood of that happening is very low. But if the team wants to get the best value for the asset, they need to acknowledge the condition they find themselves and make the right move at the right time. Don't let this turn into an Iginla situation where the player makes it impossible for you to get a good return, letting everyone know he has interest in only one team. If they know his intentions, get something done before its too late.

I never said Tkachuks deal would also be 8 years. I bet nowhere near 8 years. What if it’s 9.5 for 4 or 5 years? Young superstar? Maybe young superstar is a bit bias comment as well. Schenn is an anchor but his numbers are pretty good over the last 3 years but Tkachuk is a superstar. Maybe an all star but right now he isn’t a top 25 player in the league and sounds like he wants out and probably holds the flames hostage in contract talks. He’s not mackinnon so I’m not giving him a blank cheque. Sorry he isn’t that good and his value has dropped if the rumours are true and factoring in his contract
Tarasenko will never score again schenn is an anchor but monahan will be fine after his surgery no concerns from his yearly off season surgeries and Tkachuk is a superstar now and he’s worth whatever he wants.
If we move these guys and want firsts and good young players we might have to take on a risky contract. Id prefer to take a chance on tarasenko because it’s short term and if we continue to suck maybe we can sell him off as a rental.
This team is not good enough and what it needs is a true young superstar or 2 to build around. We don’t have any right now

For everyone using the $9M qualifying offer as an argument, you are simply wrong. A team can choose team elected arbitration instead of submitting a QO to a player like Tkachuk. In that case he will be awarded at least 85% of his previous year’s salary. For Tkachuk it was something like $7.6M, I can’t remember.
I am willing to bet anyone that Tkachuk won’t get a $9M QO, unless he has a career year this season. I think it is far more likely he will come in under or around $8M if it is a one year deal.

If a player goes to arbitration and signs a one year deal can they be traded? I’m pretty sure you can’t trade him so seems like a lose situation as well

Same outcome. Through arbitration he is forced to sign the one year contract determined by the arbiter, then becomes a UFA at the completion of that contract. Still holds the majority of the cards and only makes it worse for the team because the process is bloody and public.

Agreed. If it goes that route he will be gone after that deal for sure

If they sign with Calgary you can pretty much bet that they will be for max term of 8 years, and at a high AAV.
Otherwise, I'm not sure what their motivation is to sign.

I went back to Tkachuks end of season presser and the shortness of his answer to the question of his contract then didn't seem like a big deal. Now with all this wanting out stuff it carries a much bigger context IMO.
Maybe the whole tone it down thing did tip the scales for him.
Maybe SOB was right.

That’s the first I hear of it. I don’t think anything is stopping a team
from trading the player after arbitration but i’m not 100% sure.
Also, I was under the impression that a NTC can only be added for a player’s UFA years. That’s why Johnny’s NTC only kicks in this season for example. Therefore, It’s counter intuitive, for me, that a team would be restricted in dealing a player still under its control during his RFA years.

Ok I wasn’t sure. Maybe they can trade him but it will be a rental deal if it gets to that.
Tkachuk and Gaudreau can resign this off season and I’m sure treliving has had conversations already. If they aren’t going well or they refuse to talk this summer they both need to move and the return is probably going to be less than what people want. I’d rather take a chance on tarasenko and get more than trade these guys for just late first rounders. Based on recent Eichel rumours teams aren’t paying and he has 5 years left on his deal and is much more valuable than either of our guys
