Why?

He’s a top pairing dman with us, that had proven chemisty that got a slight raise on his current deal.

Everyone was worried that the term would be 5+ years at around $6M for an extension for Brodie. I think anybody would have taken 4 x $5M for him.

It's a great deal - you should be thrilled

It all comes down to the NMC people.

He wants to have security and given the Flames need to protect Andersson and Hanifin for the expansion draft already I don’t think it was in the cards to offer Brodie a NMC.

Even if it’s not the best approach there is no way the organization is going to protect Brodie over Gio.

Went to the team that tried to trade for him, so it makes sense. Not a bargain by any means, but probably what he is worth.

If people don't think the Flames were gonna give Brodie a 350K raise need to give their head a shake. Lots we don't know about behind the scenes like term actual amount he was asking etc.

I think he wanted to play for the leafs and the NMC

Its not like Brodie single handedly stifled McAvi. The guy must be near 2pt per game against us.

I feel about the same way I felt when Ference and Anders Eriksson left. Happy. Glad I don't have to see him looking up at the Jumbotron after another zone turnover resulting in a goal against. Although something has to be said..he did turn it up a bit in the playoffs, but its not like that has translated into OUR success... How many times have we made it out of the first round since 89? Exactly. Mix it up Tree.

Seemed like a really quality person though, all the best playing for the leafs.

This is accurate if you are looking at last year and last year only. Before his off year in Toronto Barrie was considered one of the best D men in the NHL and was predicted to be an 8+M player on his next contract. I think this is a big opportunity for the Flames to get a #1 D man on a one year deal at a very cheap rate for what he will bring.

With a NMC...I don't think it would have been all that popular TBH

Bringing back the same old team that doesn't get it done...Brodie was terrible against the Avs in the playoffs...better this year.

Best wishes to TJ and his family - happy for him to return close to home. It's a little tough to see the kids that were drafted and developed leave but that's show business.

I am guessing the Flames made a very comparable offer but Brodie decided it was time to move on. Best of luck TJ. You will be missed.

Not going to lie, this doesn't bother me at all, and I'm kind of happy we've moved on. Brodie is a high risk defenseman and a guy the Flames needed to improve upon. Wasn't a real offensive whiz and wasn't very good defensively. Hopefully they back fill the role with someone who scores more or is better in their own end. Just want someone who excels in one area and isn't average at both.

Brodie
Gillies
Lomberg
Jankowski
Talbot
Rieder
Quine

All signed on the first day by other teams. I'm a little surprised so many of our UFAs got picked up so quickly.

Nope.

Look at Barrie’s historical defensive zone numbers, he’s given up more than average in his own end his whole career.

Leafs got a great player on and off the ice. I'm sad to see him go, but I'm also glad he got his payday. Best of luck to Brodie

I think he signed for about what he’s worth. I think the NMC was a factor, but I also think Treliving is looking to sign Hall and then will have to make the D position fit the cap.

ETA: In other words I don’t think Brodie wanted to wait for the other dominoes to fall.

Glad Brodie went to the east. I would not like to root against him, I suspect not really what the leafs needed though.

With Gios whiff of a season last year, Brodie was arguably our best defenseman. 5 mil for 4 years is cheap for a #1 guy

Barrie isn't even close to as good defensively as Brodie. Only Dmen as good defensively on the market are Tanev and Pietrangelo. And Tanev is nowhere near as dynamic a 200 foot player as Brodie.

Maybe we go after Tanev?

RHed dman, same age as Brodie and is an excellent defensive dman.

Rob the Nucks of another good player.

I wonder if we circle back to Gus.

Big opportunity for Kylington to make the team full time depending on what happens with free agency.

If it is true that Florida is looking to trade Weegar, he would be a good pick-up.
