The thing is, while it has happened, it is so rare, and it has been so long since a player made the transition successfully that I don't think it can be considered a viable option. There is a good reason why it doesn't happen anymore.

Wendel Clark was drafted as a defenseman first overall.

Scott Walker, of the Preds (mainly). Tim Hunter was also drafted as a D. Can you imagine?

Yes he did, or was it with SJ? He definitely has played F.

Dustin Byfuglien was drafted as a defenseman, then converted to a forward for the first five seasons of his career, before reverting back to being a defenseman when he was traded from Chicago to Atlanta.
The Flames tried playing Housley at center for a short period of time, but he apparently hated it and they moved him back.

I think Poirier turns into a hybrid of Kylington and Andersson. Not a great skater like Kylington, but better than Andersson. There is a future for a player of Poirier's skills on the Flames, even if it is only on the third pair where he can be sheltered but pile up the points on the PP.

Burns was drafted as a forward, that's what he played in junior. Wasn't until he turned pro that then Minnesota Wild coach Jacques Lemaire moved him to D. He played both positions for various stretches in Minnesota, and same after he was traded to San Jose. Eventually the Sharks moved him to defence and left him there, winning the Norris Trophy in 2017.

In 31 thoughts...."One executive, asked if he thought Nick Robertson is getting a showcase in Toronto, replied, “There’s 20 scouts watching the Marlies every night.” He’s not someone I know real well, but AHL Toronto defenceman Joseph Duszak is looking for a new start. He’s got 37 points (32 of them assists) in 37 games. I didn’t see it, but he also played one game at forward
Not common but it happens. Every situation is different....i like how we developed Kylington and hopefully Poirer follows that path.

“I’m just trying to focus on my defensive game and just building a real strong two-way game and helping my team win every night,” he said, reminding that the Sea Dogs — with a roster that includes fellow Flames prospects Ryan Francis and Yan Kuznetsov — are priming for a berth in the 2022 Memorial Cup as the tournament hosts. “When Calgary drafted me two years ago, they already knew what I could do with the puck. Scoring and making plays with the puck, that’s something they already knew. They wanted to see how can I perform away from the puck on the defensive side and even when I have the puck, game management and all that stuff.

Those are good comments to see from the player and indicates he's still focused on improving that area of his game that the team identified to him.

Cliff Fletcher once said in an interview that he wanted to move Reinhart up to the wing, but the Flames were never deep enough on D to spare him.

JEREMIE POIRIER
Drafted by the Calgary Flames, third round (72nd overall) in 2020.
There was a time I was very concerned about the high risk game that Poirier played. Defending and detail seemed to be an afterthought dating back a few years. Fast forward to today and I see a player who has scaled back some of his risk and plays with more detail, but still has the ability to create offence. He produced one goal and three points at the Memorial Cup. Poirier could end up being a nice find for the Flames.

You can teach defense but you can't teach offensive skill. It's why I always liked this pick as he has what can't be taught.
