Gio's had a nice career and the Norris is a crowning achievement but Suter was a big time producer on an annual playoff team and cup winner and almost a PPG player as a Flame. 14th all-time highest scoring NHL defenseman, Calder Trophy winner, Stanley Cup winner, 5 time NHL all star. No offense to Gio but Suter is way closer to a HOF player.

IMO there is a tier below the top 4 that houses players like Lidstrom, Potvin, Beliveau, Mikita etc. But Jagr is the king of that list IMO.
He's over a point per game with 1700+ games. That's simply outrageous considering that doesn't account for 3 seasons in the KHL and 3 lockouts over the span of his career.
2nd all time points. 3rd all time goals. 5 art Ross trophies. All time leader in game winning goals.
Jagr was amazing.

Someone needs to make the Howe case for me. He is in the second tier boosted by his longevity. Very similar to Jagr actually. Was the best player for 5 or 6 seasons but then just played a long time.

Very good point.
Simplest way to answer is that he did everything with excellence, quiet intensity and was physically feared , while playing in a lower scoring era. Also was a huge part of 4 Stanley Cups . Was a first all star team RW 12 times and a second all star 8 times. Won the Hart 6 times and the Art Ross 6 times.
His ability to maintain an extremely high standard and play until he was 52 is beyond remarkable.

With the odd exemption HOF'ers were very good and shouldn't be mentioned as overrated, players like Jonathan Cheechoo, Jeff Friesen and many more made a boat load of money of the backs of teammates and were certainly overrated by fans and NHL execs alike.

Jagr was amazing but personally I put him below Phil Esposito (as well as some others).
Jagr had 5 Art Ross trophies. Espo had 5 also.
Espo has 2 Hart trophies, Jagr has 1.
Neither has a Conn Smythe.
Espo led the league in goals 6 times while Jagr never has.
And in career PPG, Espo is 10th while Jagr is 25th.
Career Goals per game is not even close as Jagr has 39 more goals but in 451 more games.
Jagr has him on longevity big time and was definitely a flashier and more exciting player. And being consistently great over a long period does count for alot.
But Espo gets the nod for me.

I'm voting Messier as well, the guy bought into his own hype so much. Greatest captain? Nah, that guy's name is Yzerman.

Sorry but that guys name is Bobby Clarke.

Doug Harvey
Doug Harvey appears in most top all time NHL d's based upon a google search. The problem I have is comparing players across eras. Is he overrated compared to other d from his era - no. Is he overrated compared to the great d over the past few decades? I have no idea.

Guy Carbonneau. Hall of Famer. 663 points in a whopping 1318 games! I get that he was an elite shut down center, but it's ridiculous he's in the HOF in an era where goalies didn't understand where the net was.

Gordie Howe is the definition of hockey. Tough, skilled, relentless, and a leader with tremendous longevity. No matter how much the game evolves, these are the core tenets of the game and he embodied them all as a complete package that no other player has ever done, IMO.

For the current era of players, I'd have to nominate PK Subban.

Lidstrom? Laughable. He's arguably the best European player of all time. Clearly the 2nd best d-man of all time, only behind Orr.
I nominate Doan, Kesler, PK Subban and Toews.

Matt Stajan.
Have never seen a guy on his ass so much.
So bad on short-handed faceoffs.
1003 games played and 17 playoff games and Calgary gave him a letter on his sweater.

Staj was crapped on almost relentlessly during his tenure here, any notion that he was "overrated" is completely detached from primary sources. Having a letter is irrelevant to the calibre of player somebody is -- Stajan was (and still is) a huge pillar in the Calgary community and was one of the strongest heart-and-soul players I've ever seen in this city.

Jean Beliveau says Hi.
But Clarke is seriously underrated when great players are discussed. Same amount of Hart wins as Lemieux and Orr.
This is the best thread on CP right now.
