NO. I don’t mind moving Hamonic at all, but Stone is just not good enough with his stick, his feet, or his positioning to do that job. Pretty much any defenceman would be better. Clearing the puck is job one on the PK and Stone is the worst at that.

These guys are not good coaches. Peters has had one good season in a career of mediocrity, Hartley and Gulutzen are likely done as head coaches in the league, and Ward got his job by fluke after being passed over for many years by many teams.
This is like constantly bringing in cheap goalies and wondering why you don't get good goaltending.
The league is so tight that finding the right coach is important, and better coaches are expensive. See Trotz, Boudreau, Vigneault etc.
Trelieving got lucky and will get a rare third coaching hire, but if the team cheaps out then his only chance is to get lucky on an up and coming coach...which did not work out when he chose Gulutzan.

^ Kills me that ownership will OK spending to the cap on players (which is great) but won't spend on a coach.
They even signed off on hiring Burke for what I assume was big money yet still seem to bargain shop for coaches. Weird.
Edit - Not that I think we have a coaching issue right now or that last night is on the coach.

I think Peter DeBoer is the best name out there.

I actually think Stone is an effective pk player, but the sample size over the last two years is very small.

Hopefully there is some movement in the offseason and a few coaches become available to choose from.

I think Stone just isn’t skillful enough to be on any special teams. People sometimes want him on PK because of size, but he really isn’t that physical. They sometimes want him on the PP because of his shot but that thing is slow to get off, and he misses a ton. And when it gets blocked he’s too slow to recover. Probably the slowest Dman on the team.
Absent Hamonic, I’d put the following on PK - in order: Gio, Andersson, Hanifin, Brodie, Kylington, Vakimaki, Stone.

Yep. Whether they are a no-show as the visiting team on a B2B or the rested home team facing a visiting team on a B2B the common denominator is that they were not ready to play or compete and this has been a regular occurance for some time. It's pretty evident that this team is what it is and that's fine with me as the GM clearly knows now that last season's success was an aberration and there's no need to hold on waiting for a breakout because this core isn't good enough and will never be. I'm fine with riding out the inconsistencies of this team the the end of the season as maybe they go on enough of a hot streak to make the playoffs but I'm look forward more to the offseason changes.

The PK is mostly about positioning, reading the play and effort (good stick comes from positioning and reading the play). I'm less worried about foot speed for the dmen on the PK as it's more important to stay in position and not get caught chasing.
Frequently the best players at killing penalties are not the most skilled in the team, and especially for dmen don't have to be the fastest.

I also bet we hear more "almost" moves made by the flames, which is getting beyond annoying. Do your business quietly, hearing the, hey we almost got zucker, we almost got kadri, we almost got hall, yada yada yada, is so lame. Not suggesting the flames are to blame for the leaks, but it's getting ridiculous.
|
I'm not saying I agree with it but just the way it probably goes. "Anything can happen if you get it" etc.
And yes, I fully expect the propaganda machine to be fired up again at the deadline.

Good players and good teams make coaches look good. This team needs a shake up but I think they dont have the balls to do it. I think they ride out this season and hope for the best and then make some moves. Move one of the big 2 or both.

To complete this derail I suggest we hire this coach.

I was at the game. Simple execution of passes were really off.Give Vancouver credit they out worked the Flames.

Predictably bipolar PGT.
Lazy, disengaged, sleepy, slow turkey of an opening caused the first three goals - not Rittich. He had no support, the Flames as a group looked outworked, outclassed, outskated and generally outplayed for that period (and TBH, for most of the night after that).
If this team thinks it can win on skill alone, they are quite wrong. They were resting on their laurels from a high-tempo, high-skill game against the Greasers, and thought they could just putz their way through a B2B game against the "tired" 'Nucks. Good wake-up call....if they hear it.

Oh they'll most likely win tomorrow. It will be the post New Year's follow up against the Rangers that will be more telling.

Crazy team this year that can't seem to get consistent. Friday they played possibly their best game of the season in a drubbing of the dummies from Stinktown. They should be on a high feeling good about themselves.
They come in to face a tired team, playing the second game on a back to back with less than 24 hours between puck drops, and facing a backup goalie that has not exactly been lights out this year... and they lay a huge giant turd all over the ice. Big Save Dave was just just Dave, from accounting... and the rest of the team was "we beat the Coilers in a huge beat down on Friday, why should we play hard two games in a row" float-fest.
What team will show up on Tuesday? Place your bets....
