This game was super fun in large part because both Rittich and Bishop were awesome. Just awesome. It felt like an old-time goalie battle of the sort that I used to enjoy in the late nineties.

And no need to apologize for your goalie having a great game either.
Do baseball teams “steal wins” when their pitcher dominates? Nope.

This was a game in which both goalies looked like All Stars.

Really happy they won. I only caught the last 10 minutes of the game driving home.
So far this season it really does seem like the Flames are being scrutinized on a different level by the refs. It's baffling. They do something to an opposing player, they go to the box. Opponent does it and nothing. I don't get it.

Yeah, I really thought that the first three penalties the Flames took tonight were borderline. They were the best team last year at drawing penalties; maybe this has put them under the microscope early.

Great game from all 6D and Rittich. Definitely no complaints about any of the top 9 even though there wasn’t a lot in the way of generating high danger scoring chances. Mangiapane looked really good tonight and needs to say on the second line for now. He was all over the puck and was fighting through the tough areas.

After 4 games...
12 power plays, 18 minutes and 37 seconds of PP time
18 penalty kills, 31 minutes and 9 seconds short-handed
After 4 games, they have played more than half a game short-handed. One quarter of their season so far has been spent short-handed. It is actually impressive that they are 2-1-1

The flames young D-men should ensure that the team's competitive window remains open for a long time. Hanifin and Andersson are already playing big and important minutes. Valimaki has been very good when healthy. Kylington has a great skill set and has generally played well, albeit a bit inconsistent. To have those 4 talents on the blue line is really quite impressive imo.

They're at over 15 PIM/GP. Surprisingly, Carolina has one more minor in the same amount of games with 22.
Pittsburgh has been called for only 5 minors in 4 games so far.

And yes, the Flames have had the most pk minutes per game in the league so far (a little less than 8 minutes per game)

To me, it's really the opponent playing "clean" hockey more than the Flames being an undisciplined bunch of hacks. Took them 40+ minutes to get their first PP of the game tonight, then they stole all the momentum.

This probably goes a long way to explain why they are surrendering so many shots. There is still lots to clean up, but I thought they did several good things tonight.
A statement game on Saturday that you will watch from the comfort of your hotel room will be just what the doctor ordered.
