Had two seasons with ridiculous shutout numbers. 13 & 10.
He was a beast.

So, in order for a goalie without a cup to make the hall, they have to be the best player of their decade across all positions?

Well, no we couldn’t. That recapture penalty was put in place in 2012.

Luongo always made time for his fans too. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to talk to him here and there through twitter DM’s. I sent him a message yesterday on his retirement and he didn’t need to respond because he probably has a lot of other people doing the same, but he did.
One Canucks fan I follow on twitter who is the biggest Luongo fan I know has had mental health issues and because of twitter has actually become close with

Other than @ , no one knows the full extent to what Roberto Luongo meant to me or did for me.. i dont think even he really knows.
Not only did he put up with this obnoxious fan but he embraced it & went above n beyond ..
Dont think there will ever be another us.

Hell, even with multiple Stanley Cups people say Vernon doesn't belong in the Hall because he was never the best goalie in the world.
I said it earlier in this thread, if goalies were judged by the same standard as position players, Luongo should absolutely be in the Hall, but as long as guys like Vernon and Barrasso aren't in the Hall, I don't see how Luongo qualifies.

So Luongo would have made more if he accepted going on LTIR (roughly $3m), but instead chose to retire. The panthers preferred this and apparently encouraged him. But to walk away from $3m.....there must be a little bit of fun sticking it to Acquilini.

There are rumors he is going to join the Panthers organization. He likely makes the money he gave up in retirement there.

Yeah, no. At no point was Mike Vernon even in the conversation as best goalie in the league. If Vernon was playing on literally any other team in 96/97 he wouldn't have come close, and he happened to go on a hot streak at the right time (playing behind 3 hall of fame defensemen) after a 13 win, .899 season.
It bothers me how idiotic hockey fans (and media) are about cup winners. No player has ever won the cup. Teams win the cup. To have it be deemed to be so crucially important to an individual honour like a hall of fame berth, as if the absence of being on one of those teams suggests anything at all about your ability to play the game, is incredibly stupid.

Came in here expecting lots of great meme throwbacks from their playoff run, left disappointed.
But on the plus side, I learned about the recapture penalty!

Mike Vernon won the Conn Smythe in 1997, and must have been second to MacInnis in 1989?

Roberto Luongo announces retirement
Lou was a cool ass goalie and one of the few Canucks players I really liked, had an awesome style as well and was always fun to watch.
I really wanted him to get a cup after he left Van, I felt he could’ve been a great back up on a contender but he seemed like he really enjoyed being in Florida, unfortunately they have had zero consistency there during his tenure

Interesting. Luongo was a textbook butterfly goalie, and "fun to watch" is not the first thing that comes to mind when assessing butterfly goalies. There was even a comic-book meme about it that popped up in the 2011 NHL playoffs built around the dramatic stylistic differences between him and Tim Thomas...
I wish I could find it...

Updated in 2013:
Can you hear the fans Roberto?
I remember last April another sorry night like this
And the red light Roberto
You were muttering to yourself and softly stroking your long hair
I could hear the din of goal horns
And sounds of booing were coming from above
There was something in your net that night
Your eyes were white, Roberto
You were diving there for you and me
For dupery, Roberto
Though I never thought the Sharks could lose
There's no regret
If I had to laugh the same again
I would, my friend, Roberto

From 87 to 89 Vernon finished 11th, 4th, then 2nd in Vezina voting.
I don’t know what your definition of “the conversation” is, but ... well ...
