Allen has two years left (at $4.35 million).

I don't think there is any question that they can move Brodie - just a matter of what type of return they get/want.

Meant to say if they can't move him without salary coming back.
I agree he has value.

You might be onto something the teams with plenty of cap space are not exactly the ones willing to trade assets for one year of a player.

Was there any bad blood surrounding Mrazek's departure from Detroit? If not, I would not be at all surprised to see him sign with his former GM in Edmonton.
Has a contract ever been bought out before the player played a single game on it? Could that happen with Koskinen? The only thing worse than having nearly $1.5 million in dead cap space is paying 3 times that much for a goalie you don't trust.

There was some noise before the draft about Edmonton trying to acquire Mrazek’s rights, so this would seem plausible. But I have to think the only way he signs with the Oilers is if they MASSIVELY overpay. Even if they buy out Koskinen, they can’t really afford to go over his current cap hit, and Mrazek will get that offer from someone else.

It's a game of math, right?
With a stone buyout looking likelier now than in June 18th, little bits of the dollars you can set aside start to get chipped away.
This is what lead to the Flames trading for Elliott: he fit the bill because the price was right at 2.5.
Frolik has value, Brodie has value, but you aren't going to get value if you are looking to dump cap.
If you can't move Brodie and froliks dollars without other dollars coming back, some of the better fits being discussed like Talbot don't actually fit.
I thought the flames would end up dealing Brodie for an underwhelming return prior to the draft just to get out of the cap hit, so the fact that he's still on the roster is a bit unsettling.
The scenario in which I keep Brodie and Frolik on my roster is a scenario where you have unsatisfactory goaltending and need as solid a group of defenders as you can get to insulate them.
This may be what's in the cards for us this coming season: Rittich/secondary backup.

I struggle with putting too much stock in Gillies #'s because his #1 D was Ollas-Mattson. He still has yet to wow me, but I don't know how well you could play with the flames taking all the good players

I'm still hoping that Gilles puts things together, but more and more that sounds like a wing and a prayer and I'm not sure that's a good approach for the goaltending tandem for this group. I don't necessarily want Smith back, but I would like to see a veteran paired with Rittich if Gilles doesn't stick. This is looking like a bit of a pickle.

I agree with this in principle, The alternative to trading one of them ( and it would have to be Brodie, Frolik can't be moved) for a cap dump, is to trade for a position of need, Brodie for a goalie, or rights to a goalie.
I don't think that things are that dire, as they do have decent cap space, and a Stone buyout is a palatable option. Savings of $2,333,333, and only a dead cap of $1,166,667 for two years.

That's an interesting option actually.
Who are some goalies that fit that bill in terms of AAV and perceived availability?
Dealing Brodie to the Canucks has been in the back of my head for weeks.

Brought this up yesterday but I like to scare people so I'll bring it up again today.
Treliving spent bunch of time talking to Doug Armstrong at the draft. I can only assume the Blues aren't interested in paying 2 goalies upwards of $5M each so I suspect the talk was about Jake Allen. I know people here (and elsewhere) dislike the idea of Allen but it makes a ton of sense. The Flames could unload a contract (or retain some) in exchange for addressing an immediate need.
Also, in regards to if there was bad blood when Mrazek left Detroit, they felt he was immature and he went from being the heir apparent to being an afterthought. I wouldn't call it bad blood, but I can't imagine Mrazek would be thrilled to end up playing for Holland's team again and I found it strange that Holland himself would inquire about Mrazek in the first place.

Not sure if I like the idea of bringing in Jake Allen. He's had back to back sub-par seasons.

I'd take Allen. May be the easiest to acquire and cheap. Or maybe a deal involving Frolik and they send us a nice prospect.

Calgary would have to add to Neal for Allen, but... sure, why not.

We need to probably stop getting goalies from St.Louis, it usually doesn't turn out so hot.
Wamsley - decent backup
Fuhr - well past it
Turek - pretty decent
Elliot - ok regular season with a playoff meltdown

I think Tre could dump Brodie and Frolik right now if all he wanted was 5th and 6th round picks, but he's obviously wanting to maximize value.
I wonder if he might have to go through another team to do that as what you say about teams with cap space aren't necessarily going to be looking at an asset with only 1 year.
For example, would the Kings take Brodie and Frolik in exchange for Quick? The Kings might want to move on from the veteran goalie and the Flames could use him. While the Kings won't have any use for Brodie and Frolik this season, they could give them lots of ice time and parlay them into a big haul at the deadline.
In this type of scenario, the Flames move the cap hit to an area of need (goaltending), get cap space to sign their RFAs, while the Kings move a veteran goalie with term that might be hard to move at the deadline, in exchange for two pieces that will be very easy to move.
You could also try this with Minnesota and Dubnyk or even the Rangers with Lundqvist. Both of those contracts are even shorter than Quick's and both teams are in a sort of rebuild/retool phase.

I wouldn't be. Neal may or may not bounce back, but I'm pretty certain that Allen will never be at the level of a starting goaltender again in his career, and that would be a pretty expensive backup to Rittich who might get outperformed by Tyler Parsons as soon as next year.
