I would rather lose a 31 year old Backlund off this roster than 24 year old Kylington. Outstanding game from #58.
Smith was huge, and a large part of the Islanders only having 12 shots with 9 minutes to go in the 3rd. This was as good as I've ever seen him handle the puck.
he's a talented player, but consistency is what separates guys on the bottom 6 from guys in the top 6.
Which is fine - Czarnik was a guy that we were hoping to bring some offensive upside...while you'd like him to do that every game, if he's able to chip at a 0.5 clip, that's a big win for the bottom six.
Saw a lot from him tonight to be honest...hoping he is able to continue... what i like about him more than Neal is that his speed really puts the other team on their heels... If Neal isn't able to get his one timer back, he doesn't add very much on the ice as it sure seems like he's lost half a step imo
Hockey players are inherently inconsistent.
The established ones just have a huge leash.

Huge 2 points. We win our game in hand and are now up by 3 on SJ. Team was dialed in. I have a little reservations with Tkachuk on the top line. They obviously are still working on some chemistry between them, but defensively they can be worked. I just felt more comfortable with Lindholm on that line. Time will tel.

Certainly one of those games where the stats do not tell the whole story. He was quite good (especially in the 3rd) and his outlet passes were superb tonight.
There's a reason Brodie was benched for a while. He was the real reason for those 2 goals.
At this point I really would not be upset to see Brodie moved out for some additional help up front. When he's on his game he's great, but when he's not it really costs the team. And with Andersson, Kylington, and Valimaki all showing great promise I don't think the Flames miss a beat on the back end without Brodie

Finally got to see a win live! The last four games I went to they lost in OT/SO (Dallas, Vancouver, Tampa, Buffalo). What a fantastic team effort! Smith was good again, Backlund was amazing, the third and fourth lines continue to roll. Really have no complaints about this one. I’m not even going to complain about Brodie.

The immovable object vs the unstoppable force. This will be a good one.

Looking forwaard to seeing Hamonic though! and Gio and Gaudreau I like some of the Flames guys a lot.
Quote:
Gaudreau is my #1 "player from another team you'd want on your favorite team."
Doesn't hurt that they have one of the best guys in the NHL in Hammer and one of the best jerseys IMO. A lot to like in this Flames squad, even if their name doesn't actually make sense.
Quote:
I had a flames jersey as a kid. Only other jersey besides an islanders I ever had (to my recollection). Always had a soft spot for them.
Joel Otto was one of my favorite non-Islanders growing up. I hated the Flyers but Rick Tocchet and Tim Kerr were two others.
Quote:
Well since that traitor Quine left us, we now have a huge rivalry! = )
Quote:
Still love Hamonic so I like the Flames. If we don't win the Cup, I hope they do.
Quote:
Calgary have been consistently good this year. This will be a good test for the Isles. Flames are pretty physical too. Might be an entertaining one.
Quote:
flames fans much more pleasant than oiler fans tbh
Bad play in the zone
Gotta clean it up against a team like this.
Quote:
Who made that passc Barzal? Cripes, that was to noone
Quote:
Barzals line is by far our worst line, yet hes our best player. odd
Quote:
Seriously , into no mans land
Quote:
I said it on page 1, the Flames capitalize on turnovers.
Barzal, that was atrocious my friend.
Quote:
Barzal stopped skating hard and just let backlund go all alone.
Quote:
Barzal needs some coaching. Not going to develop many plays leaning up against the boards playing around with the puck. He’s gotta drive to open space when it’s available.
Quote:
Frolik sauced it right over him. He could’ve been more aggressive to get over to him but still not too much he could do
Quote:
no idea frolik was still in the league wtf. haven't heard that name in a while.
Quote:
Barzal just watched that goal he could have tied his stick up.
Quote:
Barzal have a girlfriend in Calgary? He’s brain dead tonight
Incredibly Tilted Ice
Quote:
Greiss the only reason it’s not 3-4 nothing right now. Flames are an awesome offensive team but we look horrible in our own end right now.
Quote:
You can't make mistakes against a team like Calgary
We win playing defensively and if the floodgates open the Flames can pour them on
Quote:
And Brock Nelson loses another faceoff
Quote:
Don’t have a good feeling about this one. Teams had 4 days off. They look very flat, timid, and sloppy.
Quote:
uh oh.. take out your pad and papers boys to see what a real PP looks like. Gotta kill this
Quote:
I could order takeout faster than the amount of time it takes Nelson to release.
Quote:
They’re playing like the game starts tomorrow.
Quote:
Wow the flames are speedy...
Quote:
we are absolutely getting worked.
Quote:
This looks like an B team vs a AAA team, not the start we were looking for
Quote:
This flames team is good. They’re going to make some noise in the west in the playoffs.
Quote:
we look like old men on skates compared to them.
It’s Hammer Time
Quote:
Hammer !!!!wooo hooo!!!
OOOPS .
Quote:
Hammer!!!
Oh wait, that’s bad.
Quote:
another lost face-off after an icing.. damn.
Quote:
Team looks like it hasn't played in 3 days...
And of course Hammer scores..
Quote:
Ehh.
Was just going to type 2-0 Flames.
I’ll be scoreboard watching tonight.

Making us look awful in our own end
Which we haven’t seen a ton of this year.
Quote:
Lucky to only be down 2. These guys better wake up.
Quote:
Crazy what happens when you actually put a shot on net.
Quote:
Wow
Just outclassed everywhere.
Quote:
Worst period in a very long time. Credit the Flames because they took it to us. Better come out hard in the 2nd.
A Lack of SOG
Quote:
Do we have a shot on net in the last 15 minutes?
Quote:
3 shots...wow
Quote:
12-3 CAL-NYI
yuck
Quote:
3 shots on a guy that has a sub ****ing .900 SV%

We did a good job of passing it to him behind the net though. Keeps him sharp.
Quote:
Our lineup
Does not belong in the same ice with theirs. It’s a really bad matchup.
Quote:
No sog for final 12 minutes of period
Quote:
Halfway through the game and we have 5 shots on Mike Smith
Quote:
we have 6 SOG?
Quote:
23-6?
That’s embarrassing.
Quote:
Less than 10 shots on goal through 2. Pathetic.
Quote:
I dont think the flames are playing exceptional...we're having a bad game.
but 6 shots after 2 periods...6 shots is bad for 1 period..
Quote:
This looks like a Pee-Wee team
Against an NHL team
Quote:
This is a flogging. Greiss deserves overtime already
Quote:
This is total domination by Calgary.
should be 4-0
Quote:
Attempted shots
Calgary 54
Isles 27
Quote:
Brutal but I thought it was even worse
Quote:
As one sided a period as I've seen since following Isles... Lucky it wasn't more than 2. Good side on their turf with tails up... Needs something special to turn it around.
Komarov Scores an Own-Goal
Quote:
Shocker
Leo on again for a goal against
Quote:
What they deserve.
Thanks leo
Quote:
GOD DAMN IT LEO
Quote:
Fire Leo into the sun
He is awful.
Quote:
On the one hand
It was an own goal by Leo. On the other hand, good things happen when teams storm the net and fire pucks on goal.
Quote:
They are just better than we are. It could be 5-0 right now.
Quote:
What the hell was komarov doing there
Quote:
The puck goes in our own net off of our guys an inordinate amount of times.
It’s uncanny
Johnny with a Clapper

And we're done. We didnt deserve a win anyway, to be honest

Bull#### call to a goal in 6 seconds.

Can we win a ####ing face-off?
Quote:
Even in the replay
Was hard to see that shot by Goudraeu. He’s like a miniature Stamkos. And we have Filppula.
Quote:
What a fitting end to this #### game.
Quote:
Whoops.
Greiss' stops against Gaudreau seem to just be pissing him off more. Dudes definitely gonna put fifty more shots on net tonight
Quote:
Team had no right to be tied at 2. So being down 2 again that fast is karma and exactly what the deserve. An absolutely embarrassing effort from top to bottom tonight. Time to get Ladd in and Kuhnhackl out, and trade Beauvillier and get a real top 6 winger.
Quote:
One of the worst 5 games of the year.
Almost looked scared to play CGY. Flat, sloppy, out of sync.
This is also what it looks like when they get avg. goaltending and D.
Highlighted Barzal’s need for growth. Perimeter, poor decision making, floating. Did he think he was playing the Calgary Hitmen again.
Quote:
Team wasn’t ready to skate hard .. that was ugly
Arriving Mad from Calgary

The Islanders must be saving their energy tonight so they have it for tomorrow to lay another whooping of asses.

Quote:
Isles have 7 shots through two periods
Yikes
Quote:
I noticed that. What the hell? They must have been confused and thought they were playing Edmonton tonight, so they're phoning it in.
Two amazing things right now:
1) Chicago -- What??! They're in a Wildcard spot (granted, only for an hour). How the hell. From November 20th to Jan. 18th, they went 9 - 16 - 4. Since then, they have gone 9 - 2.
2) Patrick Laine has 2 goals in 27 games, and the Jets are still in 1st place.
Quote:
No need to save energy when you play against the Oilers though.
Quote:
I always look at teams playing the Oilers as playing the 7th game of the Stanley Cup and playing the Flames like it's the first game of pre-season. That's why plenty of people here think that they'll be bounced in the first or second round when teams need to show up.
Quote:
Isles should do us a solid and help with the tank...
Thanks in advance.

Just got home from the Dome. Great game. Glad to see Johnny get the monkey off his back. Glad we were able to beat a very solid Islanders team. I've always had a soft spot for their team and my close friend I went to the game with's second team is the Islanders. I'm glad their doing well this year and hope they do well in the playoffs. The next meeting in New York should be interesting after how rowdy it got in the 3rd.
Love the "flames fans much more pleasant than oiler fans tbh" comment from ATL lol
My other favourite was “teams play the Oilers like game 7 of the cup finals and the Flames like it’s pre-season” as if the Oilers are some intimidating force that teams have to get up for. It couldn’t possibly be because the Oilers suck and the Flames are good. It must be the other teams.
How out of touch with reality do you have to be to make a comment like that, let alone believe it?

Keith was affectionately nicknamed “Big Walt” by former teammate Eddie Olczyk, who tagged him with the name because his surname was so similar to Walter Tkaczuk, who played for the New York Rangers

Or...........the Oilers have an AHL-caliber roster and the Flames have a roster that can actually compete in the NHL?
The Oilers got the Coyotes on the 2nd night of a back to back..........and lost. Enough said.

Yeah... Daniel Tkaczuk got it too.
Hockey nicknames aren't always the most creative.
Old-timey whiskey-drinking sportswriters in fedoras chomping stogies were far more inventive.
