Put the weight of a country's expectations onto the shoulders of teenagers...then get mad when they predictably "fail" sometimes.
It's the way the tournament goes sometimes. Teams have off games and lose. I this tourney that means you are out.

I get excited for this tournament every year, because outside of the NHL playoffs it is the most entertaining hockey of the year. Watching this year's team Canada was extremely boring, now is that because there really wasn't any star power on the team this year or poor coaching from Hunter, probably a lot of both.
I think it is fair to voice displeasure with the way the tournament went for Canada as I don't think Canada played as well as they could have. That being said to go out of your way and attack the players on social media is so stupid.

I hate how there are always the inevitable debates after every loss on whether Canada is still a hockey power, like it's our god given right to win every tournament. Losses happen, other countries are competitive too. People giving these kids a hard time because they lost should be ashamed of themselves.

Losing at home in front of a rabid fan base always poses questions. Close game against Switzerland, that happens. Losing to Russia was the first red flag. Usually in those games, Canada hammers the Russians in the first period.

I think the explanation is really simple, this team just wasn't good enough to compete with some others. No more and no less.
It happens, particularly with teenagers.
I think its great that the Swiss have a shot at a medal as that country has been doing things the right way to make their national teams better. It has taken a long time but the fruits are being bared...so to speak.
A lot of these kids will be returning next year and i suspect will be a much better foe than they showed this year. The effort was there but the skill/abilities were lagging vs where other countries are at this point.

Yup. Remember last year the Swiss coach said they had no chance against Canada in the QF and everyone made fun of him for it. He didn't say that this year, instead he said it is the best Swiss junior team ever (14 returning players).
Switzerland actually has 2 world championship silvers, 2013 and 2018.

Geez I hated Comtois as the captain too but some of the comments being made directly to him are a bit much. Holy crap

I love this guy, he's awesome. And he was dead on with what he said last year and what the implications for his team this year were.

Obviously the people being vicious on social media are horrible idiots, and I don't blame him at all for the loss; if anyone deserves blame for the missed penalty shot it's Hunter for putting him in there in the first place... but the first sentence of that statement makes me kinda hate Max Comtois.

All institutions run their course and in time disappear. Don Cherry is no different.

Also, in the sense of what he was predicting, he was right.
|
The outcome of events which unfolded aligned with the results he predicted, but this by no means indicates that Cherry was "right." Had Team Canada scored only eight goals against Denmark last week instead of 14, would they have won yesterday's game? Were the players more reserved in their goal celebrations would they have beaten Finland? Who knows? But I suspect it would have made no difference. That game was decided on a couple of bounces that had virtually nothing to do with what had transpired during round-robin play.

Correct me if i'm wrong but despite trying to use semantics and fancy wording, when it comes down to it Don Cherry predicted a result, that result happened. Seems pretty simple.

"Don Cherry said the Hockey Gods would bite Team Canada for that 14-0 pasting of Denmark and some of the antics after scoring."
He didn't predict anything. The result yesterday likely had very little to do with the result v. Denmark, let alone some mythical hockey gods. One could argue that perhaps the pasting masked some weaknesses in Team Canada's squad, or made them over confident, but all that would be impossible to prove.
The reality is that Canada lost because
- A fluke goal was scored in the waning moments
- A stick blew up on a chance that had a good chance of going in the net AND resulted in the opportunity the other way
- Inability to score enough goals in the two most important games
- A missed penalty shot in overtime
- Overall the very thin margin between winning and losing in this tourmanet
So what exactly is Cherry right about?
If any one of the above things doesn't happen Canada wins.
Personally i don't think the squad had enough high end offensive talent or a game breaker....but they also had a LOT of bad luck that resulted in the loss.
