Nylander will be traded this season by the Leafs. After this hold out, there is no chance either side wants anything to do with each other. Nylander was being a baby, and the Leafs have learned from past mistakes, and are not willing to over pay players anymore. I guess when you get 61 points in the NHL you deserve 7+ million a season.
Thank god we have Johnny and Mony locked up, they are both worth 9 on the open market.

It will be interesting to see how much rust he has and just what the rust does as far as team chemistry, since they will now be gifting him a top 6 spot.

Nylander simply isn't worth 8+ like some suggested.

Larger cap hit were likely based on 8 year contracts.
For Nylander to get $7M and only commit one UFA year is a huge home run for him. Plus he essentially gets paid completely for his missed time and gets a large amount of his salary as bonuses.
This contract is actually better for Nylander than getting him for 8 years and $64M. He'll hit UFA at a great time for him, at age 28.

Is it Hyman or Kapenen that have been his placeholder since he has been out? Sucks for one of those two. No more juicy points producing minutes.

Yeah it's interesting...
From Nylander's perspective, $6.96M, only giving up 1 year of UFA, is fantastic. Also, he gets 40% of the money in the first 10 months.
But from Toronto's perspective, the cap hit is manageable, and more importantly, this contract will be VERY tradable after July 1st.
Win-win?

According to capfriendly, it is $45 MM over 6 years. That averages out to $7.5/year. The cap it is just distributed funny with $10.3MM this year and $6.96 on years 2 to 6. It is also heavily front loaded with bonuses. So the comparable is now $7.5MM/year for a 20 goal/62 point winger on his second contract.

It's pro-rated to $45M. He actually receives $41.77M ($6.96M per year)

So you are saying he lost $3.33MM this season for missing the first 28 games or so? Where did you see that?
Regardless, salaries are always prorated if a player signs late. The comparable number us $7.5MM.

He receives $6.77M in salary this year (of the $10.2M)
The comparable number isn't $7.5M. He receives $41.77M, which is $6.96M over 6 years.

But he didn’t play 6 years. He missed part of this year. You can’t count time he didn’t play as part of the equation. For the time he played, it equates to $7.5M per season.

I agree. The contract he signed is for $45MM/7 years. The fact that he doesn't get all of the first year cash because he signed late is irrelavent for comparables.

I suppose what it does do is tell the next guys "this is how much you lose for not signing the same contract in the summer".

You also can't count money he doesn't receive.
If a person misses time due to injury, their salary still counts.
Just because he sat out and will play less games, he still receives $6.77M in salary for this season. It is what it is.
If I make $100,000 in a month, I can tell myself that it is $1.2M per year pro-rated, but that doesn't make my bank account any bigger.

But it's not $45M. He gets $41.77M
They inflated the stated salary for this year, so that he would still get $6.77M. That inflated number doesn't mean anything, other than being a conversation piece.
When he files his taxes, he won't be bragging that the number was pro-rated to $10M.

Only if you assume they would have paid him $10M for this year if he signed in the summer. Which, IMO, is not a good assumption to make.

They didn't inflate the salary, they inflated the cap hit.
The salary is 41.77 million over 6 seasons, making an AAV of 6.96, which, when pro-rated for the remaining 68% of the season makes the cap hit become 10.2 million this year. This is done to ensure teams aren't circumventing the cap by waiting to sign players until later in the season.

I don't know why not. The reason for that deal is to manage cap hit year to year. That wouldn't have changed.
But the point for other players is that a holdout rarely results in a significant increase. I doubt he made a whole lot more in this contract than what was being offered.
