I thought you were right until I looked. 28 year old UFA forwards with that much experience and who score 30-40 points aren't that easy to find.

That may be the best one-two series of moves I've seen. Unreal by Wilson.
Addition by subtraction in losing Boedker - the definition of a one-way forward who is so lost defensively his offensive game can't begin to make up for it. Just losing him for free would be a win, and especially when you factor in his $4 million contract. Not only that, but turning Boedker a 6th and a 7th into a 2nd, a 4th, and two 5ths.
OUT
Depth winger with a horrible contract
6th
7th
IN
2nd
4th
2 x 5ths
$4 million cap space
That is crazy good. Hats off to the Sharks today, as brutal as it is to see a divison rival win a deal.

Is there any reason to think the Flames are any more focused on character than other teams are? Of course managements talks about character and the community. The management of every teams does. It's part of the PR of a professional sports franchise.

Oh god...I can see it now, every trade this summer
"Stupid Tre, we should have traded Brouwer for that guy"
Nobody wants Brouwer...and there is a good chance Calgary was on Hoffmans no trade list. Don't blame Tre for geography and a ####ty mayor/citizen's who think our garbage facilities are "fine"

The Sens taking a bizarre stance or making weird moves is nothing new
In the fact the organization doing something that actually makes sense would be strange.

Sens were one post away from the finals and possibly cup champs just over a year ago, crazy.

Except with the Oilers track record they regularly pay $4mil for 15-20 point players...ouch

And bring on the Sharks. I think they are super overrated. That and there is no way Vegas repeats what it did this year.

I don't think any Canadian GM could touch Hoffman, because of the intense media scrutiny. His case is beyond character, and in the realm of major distraction.

I think you're right. But that's about media scrutiny, not some kind of franchise dedication to character.

Bottom line here is that a 25-30 goal scorer was available for peanuts, and the Flames couldn't make the deal. Opportunity lost IMO.
I am getting a little sick of hearing about the Flames focusing in on "character" to build their team. So far "character" hasn't amounted to a hill of beans. The "character" guys they've invested in have been massive flops. I wouldn't mind a guy that is a little nuts, so long as he scores 30 goals, is a plus player, and helps the team get deep in the playoffs.

You make it sound like Ottawa phoned up Treliving and he politely declined. There are lots of factors that might have been in play, too many for you to conclude that they "couldn't make the deal".
For instance, I believe Hoffman has a NTC of some sort? Maybe Flames are on his no-trade list.

Again there has to be some bar in place. And you are also ignoring what a gong show the Sens have been. You think he's good enough to risk introducing that level of chaos?
Passing on him is a sound decision. Use the assets elsewhere.
This situation offers no insight into whether or not the Flames have too much focus on character. It is entirely unique.

The problem isn't so much the baggage, it's the position Kane and Hoffman play. We only have so many assets, and spending them on LW's when our right side is abysmal doesn't make sense.
Signing plugs does need to stop, of course, even if they're more saintly than Ned Flanders.

Meh, good, let the ######bagery of Kane and Hoffman infect the Sharks locker room...they still won't make it to the SCF.

Hoffman is a Florida Panther.

funny conversation.
Could the flames have really moved frolik, kulak and one of their remaining 3 draft picks for Hoffman without this message board falling apart?
