I hope the Flames do win the lottery. It would put an exclamation point on their moves that led to this horrible season and it would take a good player out of the conference.
Flames should never have hired a coach that has not had any previous NHL success. They should have replaced him mid-season when it was clear to everyone but Treliving that it wasn't working.
They will probably hire a green coach next or get one that has been abandoned off the scrap heap. That is the Flames way. You have to do things a certain way to wind up in the bottom half of the league year after year.

Bennett looked fine for me. Tried creating, and had some jump.
It's funny how Jankowski gets a pass because he's a rookie, yet Bennett is 2 years younger, and had a better rookie year.
I think Bennett and Jankowski still have some growth and progression left. They aren't the biggest problems on the team.

Disagree whole heartedly. No Janko will not be a superstar but he will be important moving forward. As will Bennett.
This is a total team failure but you don't cast away anyone under 24 IMO.

Haha, that's too funny.
But coach, I think we should focus on scoring goals.
no, no fellas, goals are for suckers, we focus on putting pucks on the net, the more the better, don't worry about scoring, aim for the goalies chest. In fact goals are bad because they don't allow for rebounds and no rebounds means less shots, and less shots is terrible for our possession numbers.

I think that’s a significant change in the leadership group. I just wonder if it would be enough...

Why stop there?
Ken King - out
Brian Burke - out
And while we're at it ....
Murray Edwards - replaced as Chairman, Governor, etc.
If Lamoriello is out in Toronto hire him to rebuild the organization.

I hear you, but I don’t think the Flames can afford to make the untouchable list very long. Based on age and perhaps a change in leadership, Gio is excluded.

That’s a BS post.
Most of the guys who post advanced stats stuff have been posting in many threads. They just stay out of the game threads because they are toxic.
Like pretty much any type of analysis or stats there will always be outliers.
14/15 Flames were an example of that. Chemistry, style, coaching, penalty differential (took fewest and drew lots) and at times pure luck (last minute comebacks) overcame the “stats”.
17/18 Flames are the other end of that spectrum. Poor coaching and leadership, piss poor special team, too many penalties, and a piss poor shooting percentage (Same team shot 1.3% higher last year or ~33 goals YoU).
IMO what’s more annoying is the fact that somehow with this fan base outshooting the other team has become a bad thing. And somehow this team magically takes shots that are worse than the other team, while the other team scores goals on “higher quality” shots from the point that bounce off two guys from the blue line then go in.
It’s a #### season. Part of it poor coaching, part of it on a lack of scoring depth on the roster, and as much as people here don’t like to admit a bit of bad luck too.

I would move Gio if management could get get decent return. Two reasons: one, he is the only untouchable player (save maybe dougie and monny) that could return reasonable value. Bennett and Brodie have destroyed any marketability they have. Gio could land a decent return and this team needs a culture change (scapegoating Gio here unfortunately.)
Second, as good as Gio is playing now that is still a bad long term contract. Way too much term.

Maybe it's a lack of confidence in the game plan or maybe they've become snake bitten and have fallen into the "here we go again" syndrome.

Yeah I'm just trying to explain why I think the players panic and make mistakes. The way I see it, our style of play has a few major weaknesses that make it more difficult for us to jump out ahead when we play well, so our margin for error is too tight when we're just trying to weather the storm.

Did he really say that? Maybe he was worried the guys would lose focus and have a breakdown?

GG's post-game comments: blah, blah, powerplay got chances, blah, blah, their goalie was great, we played well, blah, blah, need to stick with the plan, blah, blah.

I am just hoping that the coaching staff gets axed tonight - Gulutzan, Cameron and Jerrard. Gelinas can take over behind the bench to wrap up the season while the management team focuses on their search.
Why?
Because for the love of God, I want to at least see some interesting Flames hockey this season. At any rate, it would be interesting to see what Gelinas does after being introduced to the coaching fraternity under a 'tough task master' in Hartley, and a 'player's coach' in Gulutzan. Maybe he picked up tips from both to be that happy medium.
I won't personally take pleasure in any of the coaching staff lose their jobs - I am sure they are all good people with family. A change has to happen between now and October.
I can stand boring hockey if they win. It is unbearable to play a boring, slow, plodding style and not win.
