Toughness in the sense of being hard to play against is a feature the Flames don’t have. Doesn’t have to mean goons. We all agree they don’t really factor in anymore

Let’s start with taking away time and space from shooters.

I disagree with the people who say the Flames priority should be toughness.

Sure, it was a problem tonight.
But the team needs more skill. A lot more. Especially on the 3/4th lines.

I hope Smith doesn't play the next game.

I didn't know a thing about the term before then, just thought I'd pass along the same thing I'd heard.
I think what Steinberg was saying was that *if* Tre did put try to lottery-protect the Flames 1st rounder (and Steinberg's admits he didn't know if Tre did or did not attempt this) then NYI may have replied that the trade was a no-go.

Tre (and everyone else, including media & fans) were pretty confident we were a playoff team, so it wasn't worth walking away from the deal over it.

Again, this is a pretty big "if" here. But essentially, Steinberg was saying that Tre isn't stupid, nor is Snow. They full-well knew about conditional picks and lottery protection clauses and like lottery-protection is not something Tre would accidentally omit or try to slip under the radar of the deal.

I'm beginning to think we're in trouble of not getting home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

“But, but. Corsi!!!!! Fenwick!!! High danger chances!!!!”

I’m sure all the stats nerds are rubbing one out to today’s stat sheet, as I’m sure we won the Excel 2007 fight for another day.

If there’s any proof reliance on these bs stats are frikking meaningless in the real world, I invite anyone to analyze the last three Flames games.

What column calcultes killer instinct and desperation? Because that’s the column the Flames lose in night in, night out.

Well yeah, you'd have to be pretty dumb to think not making the pick conditional was an oversight on Treliving's part. There was a bidding war for Hamonic. Treliving got desperate and kept upping the bidding after the other teams backed out. It was a serious misjudgement. You don't pay a 1st and two 2nds for a supporting piece like Hamonic.

In my post a few pages back, I was talking more mental toughness, not necessarily physical toughness. These guys are a fragile bunch. I think a more experienced and proven coaching staff could definitely help with this issue.

Stick a fork in them. Most disappointing season since 2010.

I think it's hard to deny the Flames looked good in the 1st period. The underlying numbers support it, too.

The problem is when this team faces any sort of adversity, they crumble. That's coaching. The Xs and Os look good, but that's only half of a coaches job.

Definitely. There's a lot of talent on this roster, and it feels like we've completely wasted 2 years of it with this incompetent coaching staff, and an inability to properly utilize the team's strengths. Take the PP for example. If we had even an average NHL caliber PP system, we'd very likely be sitting in a playoff spot right now.

I’m afraid that mental toughness you are referring to is not just coaching.

I wouldn't mind seeing Gully coaching in Edmonton to be quite honest.
