Wow Tre will take some deserved heat for this one. Both goalies are liabilities right now.

Thought the team battled hard. Deserved the win. Gio being Gio what a stud. With Smith in net we likely win.

This was not the game we needed two points. It was the games against the Rangers, the Stars, Avs, blown leads against Vegas, missed opportunities against the Oilers and on and on and on and on.

After tonight’s loss, my dad resigned himself to the Flames missing the playoffs this season. He immediately started reconciling it by wondering what top prospects will be available in the first round. It was a Ralph Wiggum moment when I broke the news that we have no first or second round picks.

Putting Gillies in was a mistake, he's looked shaky every game. How close was he letting in a goal from 200 ft, every game he's been in he's been either let in a basic shot, or has lost the puck behind him and has zero reaction to it. This season is done.
Ferland just came back from an extended time off and looked it. Brouwer had one of the best games I've seen as a Flame, and I don't know what chemistry he was screwing up because they weren't getting anything done anyways.

Rittich hasn't looked that good either, so it was really a no win. I get its a frustrating season, but its also frustrating to have to come here and read everything bad is the coaches fault and everything good is in spite of him. He may not be the best coach but he isn't the garbage he is made out to be by some on this forum. And when he is able to get the team to respond I think he should get a little credit. Don't worry, you only have another dozen games to bitch about him anyways.

Good game, but like I said after the Rangers game, sometimes you lose the games you play well. The Player’s thought they could just coast through the season and turn it on when they had to. Really behind the 8 ball now. Hopefully we can go on a bit of a run.

On a plus note, I’ve been really impressed with Kulak lately. I think he can move up the lineup next year, and if someone like Anderson is ready, maybe we can afford to trade one of our D either at the draft or for a RW.

I know it’s been beaten to death, but I really don’t understand the obsession with the LD/RD pairings. I understand it more for the forwards on the PP, as they’ll be able to make better passes down low, or shoot on rebounds from tighter angles, but to have off shooting defenceman allows them to shoot more from the centre of the ice. I really think the reason we don’t see many one timers from our D is because it’s awkward when you’re not on the off side.

Honestly it was this that I thought either we see Smith back next game, or management has written the season off. It is looking like option B.

A goalie that was going to be significantly better and proven was likely to cost a pretty penny. My guess it would've been a second rounder. Since we didn't have that it was going to have to be more creative.
And then people would've been over him for mortgaging the future and not giving young guys a chance and hampering their development, so they when they played junk like this next year, he was to blame for not letting them play this year, rather then the truth they they just aren't ready for the pressure. So he couldn't win even if that goalie came in and got this team 8 points people would still not have liked it and assumed these two guys could've done it with out giving up assets.

But I'm guessing Treliving agonized over that regardless of the price. If he knew for sure that the next 4 games the Flames would have gotten only 1 point, and 1 or 2 below average goals per game, at the wrong time went which prevented decent efforts go for not, where the Flames could've legit had 7 or 8 points with better goaltending, he would've paid that price.

Hamonic is absolutely not the reason for our struggles so pointing the finger at him is just another pathetic attempt by you to cast a shadow on the wrong guy.

There are many other obvious choices. The trade may look terrible in hindsight if the team misses the playoffs but it was a calculated risk at the time.

My personal opinion on the position we’re in, in no specific order:

- Terrible special teams as a whole, specifically the powerplay.
- Inability to address the talent level on the bottom 6 although they’ve been better lately.
- Mike Smith getting injured. Our backups have not been good since he went down.
- As Kent Wilson put it, “the shocking decline of TJ Brodie”. Although this goes back a couple of seasons.
- Some absurd coaching decisions but I don’t think the team has quit on GG.
- Johnny and Monny disappearing at the absolute worst time.

Anyways, Hamonic is on a great contract with term remaining, he’s rock solid defensively and those guys don’t come cheap.

Chris Stewart really has nothing to do with anything. He was a waiver claim, Treliving wasn't working the phones all day trying to trade for him.

He made it sound like he kicked the tires on some trades at the deadline but the prices weren't right. I guess if we knew what were some of the offers for goalies that didn't happen we could maybe debate that but we can't. Maybe he thought Rittich and Gillies could hold the fort while Smith was out? Rittich had some good stretches.

If tre had acquired a goalie for a pick or prospect how many people would have slammed him for giving up more assets instead of giving the youngsters a chance?

Half this place at least wanted Rittich to play more when Smith was perfectly healthy...people were even saying things like "he's got better numbers" and talking about a 1A/1B situation

Same posters are now on the GM for not giving up assets for some un-named solid goaltender that was supposedly available.
