Huh so they just do enough to open the rocket rather than actually having enough explosives to explode the rocket.. I guess makes sense.
Yeah, typically the aerodynamic forces will be so high that they'll do most of the damage with a little help.
The one and only Scott Manley just posted a video about the system:

That was exciting to watch, coles notes. Booster did its job in getting through stage separation but was terminated on the return trip. Ship made it to about 30 seconds from engine cutoff before it was terminated.

1/10. They did not have Elon duct-taped to the hull. Would not rocket again.

"Rapid Unscheduled Dis-Assembly" has to be one of the funniest terms for "explodes" that I have ever heard.

These views have been insane.
Booster hit that dense atmosphere pretty quick… went wobbly immediately. .

So is the plan to try and pull off the Starship landing with this mission?

Going up went well, coming back not so much. Booster looks like engines didn't reignite, and the ship looked like it was tumbling on reentry so probably didn't make it very far down.
But with the ascent going well that probably means a quicker turnaround to the next test assuming nothing weird happened with the launch site.
