I noticed this in pre season as well. Get it together boys!!!

Smith was great and that is a big relief
This exactly, I think it was near the end of the third period, Brouwer dumped the puck in and he just casually standing around, not even chasing the puck. I was sitting there thinking, WTH, do you expect someone else to chase down your dump in, you moron?

This is exactly how the team looked in pre season. Why did we think we would turn some magical switch ? And was it a coaching strategy to play Brodie against McDavid instead on Gio and Dougie?

Outside of Smith, everyone was ####ing brutal.

Same crap from pre-season; lackadaisical plays and passes, with poor point shots. I haven't been impressed with a Flames overall effort since the end of last season.

I honestly did not find a single forward or D-man for the Flames dangerous tonight.

I expected a loss and was ready to blame Smith. Thanks for proving me wrong, Flames?

The Glass signing was terrible and Glass was awful tonight which isn't a surprise but he beat up Kassian!

Gulutzan is trying to put a square peg in a round hole putting Brodie at LD. Get it through your head - it ain’t working. Get him back on his off side where he’s a star. He’s completely wasting him. So frustrating.

In no way expected a win but really didnt expect that. Zero execution and looked a half step behind the entire game.

Unfortunate b/c it overshadows how well smith played. There were multiple occasions when i thought "this'll be a goal for sure" out of habit, but alas it was stopped.

We need to get rid of the dead wood pretty quickly

No room for big slow and unskilled players in the NHL anymore

Get Bennett on that top line and go with a third line of Ferland - Jankowski - Jagr

What's the deal with our D standing behind our net and slamming it around the boards? Is this our new great breakout strategy?

I thought Bennett played really well. If put in the right position he could have a great year. I know the thought is Jagr will play with him but I don't think a slow puch possession guy is good for him. I'd put him 1RW personally.

I'm not calling for GG's head. He got the team into the playoffs last year and it's only one game in but he has to change tactics.

Flames are not a chip and chase team (of course you have to do it sometimes) they need to carry the puck in. Gaudreau is not going to retrieve pucks on the dump, he has to carry it into the zone and be creative.

I feel GG has taken the creativity out because he's afraid of turnovers at the blue line. Backlund's line may have been one of the better lines tonight but it wasn't a great game by them. Backlund can execute zone entries- that's when you see Tkachuk gaining possession down low.

It was so easy on Talbot because CGY was never dangerous. They kept doing the same stuff and it doesn't work.

EDM walked into the offensive zone all night, they rarely dumped it. CGY could not breakout to save their lives.

Smith was the only positive. GG won't change tactics but it's clear this team won't play to make plays but instead play afraid to make mistakes.

Jagr rarely dumps the puck but he might get coached into it. Hopefully the opposite happens and the rest oft the players take after him and some creativity spreads through the lineup.

Boo.

Smith was great.

That game was all Oilers. At least last year Elliot blew it for them. This year that was a team effort of suck.

Why do I even watch hockey, its just stressful and depressing as hell when the team you cheer for couldn't give two ####s about beating a rival!

Wow, Brouwer spent more time against McDavid than Backlund did?
Whoops

Our centre situation is quickly becoming the death of us. "He's a centre, he will be groomed that way and we won't deviate".

Okay great, but you're also saying we're going for it now, while Bennett and Jankowski aren't able to serve us because you won't let them see the light of a top six role while bringing them along properly.

Meanwhile other teams make the decision to move centres to wing all the time. Trust me, I get the reasoning, but you have to have the flexibility when you have a possible four top six centres just kind of sitting there at the same time as you scratch your head trying to fill top six wing positions.

It's utterly frustrating to watch.
