Whatever is a great song. I think Bittersweet Symphony is a better song, but obviously The Verve doesn’t hold a candle to Oasis in an apples to apples comparison. Drugs Don’t Work is a great song as well, but I think Don’t Look Back in Anger is one of the most sonically similar in Oasis’ catalogue and a better song imo.

Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory, released a year apart, remains one of the most iconic 1-2 punches in music history. Harking back to the days of the Beatles and Neil Young where artists would put out incredible albums that became almost instant classics in quick succession. Not quite the same, obviously, as the Beatles 13 album catalogue, almost all of which are revered classics that are influential even today, came out in the span of 7 years. But definitely (maybe) one of the closest modern examples.

I was going to make another big post about Oasis but this is the Linkin Park thread. So, songs I'd love to hear with the new singer:

Crawling
Faint
In the End
One Step Closer
Somewhere I Belong
What I've Done
Papercut
Numb
Breaking The Habit (only because it'll sound better with the female vocal, I'm not really a big fan of this one)

To be honest these IMO are the only Linkin Park songs I would show people and everything after What I've Done sounds like a different version of What I've Done. To circle back to Oasis, people can not like their music, but just the vast and varied nature of the catalogue puts them above LP. Honestly I don't think it's close, Oasis is in a different tier quality wise regardless that sits in a tier just below the greatest acts ever and I think LP is a solid tier below that. But I understand why because people probably hear Linkin Park the same amount in general and they hear the same 6 songs from either band, but outside of those same 6, Oasis has them by a landslide.

why are turning a Chester Bennington thread into an Oasis thread? Sigh. As if their reunion wasn't bad enough.

Man...they played Linkin Park on the radio this morning, they were a great band.

Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but I really like them.

Fair.

Since Emily’s apology came out, one of the accusers responded by highlighting the fact that she not only lied in her apology, but also completely avoided mentioning her connections to Scientology. Not only is she a scientologist, but her parents work for the “church.”

Apparently Emily actually attended the trial with a group of people who proceeded to intimidate witnesses and accusers, according to the response, and some of those victims have been ongoing targets of intimidation and harassment by the church in the year since.

They really sullied their legacy here. What a colossal and stupid mistake.

Chester Bennington was the least rock and roll name ever.

I really liked the new song, then heard all the attendant issues around the selection of singer, and was properly disgusted. What a shame. Cannot support them for supporting Scientology in any way shape or form, and hiring her is doing just that. I do think it spits on Chester's legacy for sure.

I saw Dead Sara a number of years ago when they backed up Muse and enjoyed their show, but I never went any farther to listen to their music.

Linkin park 15.7 billion views on YouTube

Spotify rank 54 vs 144, both obviously very influential bands but there's a significant gap in popularity.
A lot of that is also influenced by the bands being a generation apart and Linkin Park having a much larger portion of their time in the YouTube era.

In fact I'd say most of that is influenced by timing. Oasis sold 75 million records, Linkin Park sold 100. It's not a 5 to 1 gap here.

Not impressed by the induction of this Emily so far, but we're vetting our bands/music for political/cult associations now?

At this rate we'll be boycotting half of the industry in no time.

Or we could just let our ears enjoy what they enjoy. I know, crazy concept. But it was that way once.

And to be clear, I don't condone her activities outside of the band, but what she does in her personal time will have no bearing on my enjoyment of Linkin Park. The quality of the music will determine that.

Her involvement also won't retroactively ruin the band either lol. So dramatic... She had nothing to do with the Chester era, and let's not forget that the band existed before him as well.

Weird post. We’re not “vetting” but uh, yeah, almost everyone vets people before hiring them, especially for a job this public, so Linkin Park should have.

And hey, someone being in a cult that bullies rape victims is a worthy topic of discussion, no? And it’s not exactly the same as “politics” unless you think that’s a valid political stance.

Your ears will always enjoy what they enjoy regardless of what anyone does, but you can use your brain to choose whether to use your wallet to support people based on more than just “ears like it” if you want. It’s not like this is new or anything has changed so I’m not totally sure why you’re acting like this is some new thing. People still stream Kanye. You can just say you don’t personally care about what she did without making it some societal thing you’re being pressured into discussing.

And yeah, her being included does impact the legacy. She’s part of the history of the band now. When Chester’s kid is saying the same thing, maybe fans ought to consider that it’s a valid position.

I'm married to someone who got out of one of these cults with a lot of consequences to her. She was born into it and got out when she was 18 and was shunned from all family. She also knows a whole lot of friends from that area that left in various stages of adulthood and lots had pretty tragic lives after, especially those who spoke out. I have more personal bitterness against these cults than most, but I think you have to be careful to sort out if they are victims of the cult or perpetrators.

What is really known about her current status? I googled around a bit and don't see that she has recently identified with Scientology. The court thing looks like she went to a pre trial hearing somewhat supporting Masterton. Did she even go on her own accord, or know the evidence at that point? It also seems like she was born into Scientology, and seems entirely possible she doesn't want to face the consequences of speaking out against them.

Yeah just like everything else you can be a Scientologist and not be involved in some of the craziness that goes on in their central hub.

I have a childhood friend who’s Scientologist. I had no idea he was until we were in our 20s and another friend told me. No one was trying to groom any of his friends or anything like that purely their own thing. He says the odd zany thing but so do my friends that are religious so… whateva.

I don’t care if people are Scientologist, I care if people have slaves and rape people. Lots of religions got that going on.

I've read a lot of takes on LP, but this is one I need to ask about.

The album right after Minutes to Midnight(where What I've Done was on) was "A Thousand Suns". That album is a a Complete, with a capital C, 180 in terms of style from what they had done previous. It was a very experimental album and totally went against the LP norm from the early years.

They also released One More Light in 2017 which is basically a pop album with very little rock to it.

So I'm very curious what you're hearing to suggest that everything after What I've Done sounds like a different version of that song?
