Not taking into consideration the discount we're paying to Hamilton, Brodie and Hamonic.

Average it out over the top five and it's fine for a blue line of this quality.

If anyone is injured or has to sit out or can't play then there's a revolving door on D and I mean that in a really good way.
IMO we have 4 guys who can play on your top pairing and 5 guys who can play top 4. That is contending depth gentlemen

The biggest reason why I don't like this is it blocks the path for somebody like Andersson.

Got to be pretty ####ty being a fan of a team that had to give up a good player or asset to Vegas and seeing the Flames lose nothing only to have the Flames sign their sought after UFAs Versteeg and Stone a week later.

Would you rather have Wideman at $5.5M as our fifth, or Stone at $3.5M as our fifth? Any way you look at this, it's a good deal, especially if GG is looking at rolling out a more balanced defensive deployment. Also, injuries WILL happen, and even if two of our defensemen go down, we would still have an amazing top three.

This is a deal we can afford to make.

Honestly thought there was no chance when Hamonic came over. This is insane. Tre is killing it.

The Flames should have their eyes on first in the division. It's an attainable goal in a very, very competitive Pacific division.

Is there a better top 5 in the NHL? I don't think there is.

As long as there is not a NTC this becomes a nice asset to trade in the next year or 2 when you look at the price of Dmen on the market

I think a D who has a career average of almost 20 minutes/game is probably just fine at $3.5 million.

Justifying bad contracts by burning through the positive gains of your good contracts isn't exactly a great strategy.

Hamonic and Stone at less money than Wideman and Engelland...and a Major upgrade.

Some of you will never be happy

I like having a veteran on the bottom pairing but I don't like paying more than 3 million for that player.

I suppose it could be worse, it could be russell for 4x4, but that's not a great start when you're comparing it to an awful deal to judge it favourably.

We're paying him not just to be a #5 defenseman, but we're paying him to have good depth on defense.

Can you guarantee that each of Giordano, Brodie, Hamilton and Hamonic will be completely healthy and not miss any games over the next three years? If one of them goes down then Stone can jump up into top 4 and the others also adapt as required.

The Flames are going to be giving opposing teams fits this season.

The Stone signing provides the depth you need in your #5 d-man, cause there is always the risk of an injury to one of your Top 4.

Some people are never satisfied:

Stone is arguably a solid #4 defenseman on any team. Those kind of guys are getting paid $4-5 million and more in some cases.

Just last year we were paying Dennis Wideman $5.25 million and Deryk Engelland $2.9 million. Both are guys that are either out of a job, or barely hanging on to an NHL job at this point.

Stone is 27, a productive player with a good fit on the Flames, and is going to make $3.5 million for multiple years. He took a $500 K pay cut on his most recent contract in his prime playing years to sign in Calgary for 3 years.

If things don't work out, that's at least a very tradeable contract.

If it works out, the Flames have the best defense in the entire league bar none.

Please...tell me what the downside to this is again?

None of the above.

This is a big mistake by Treliving.

Paying a fair price for one of the best top fives in the league is.
