We aren't. That is not score-adjusted (trailing/leading in games). We're 14th after score effects are factored.

I thought the eye-test matched the advanced stats. Pens controlled the puck all night (outside of OT), and the Flames were opportunistic in scoring twice off the rush in quick succession. Gulutzan spoke to the Flames being outplayed as well.
Johnson let in a softy, but outside of that - he kept us in this game.

I agree. I mean the Pens had more possession time for sure, but they are one of the best home teams in the league.
I thought the Flames played a solid road game and Murray kept the Pens in it just as much as Johnson kept the Flames in front.

With my changes to the game stories I find I get to make that eye test to underlying numbers comparison period by period these days and to me this one was what it was.
The Flames were good, but the Penguins were the better team in each of the three periods, and demonstrability so in the second.
I think if you get some chances on a powerplay a fan feels it's been evened up both those aren't five on five shot attempts or corsi relative.
Additionally overtime doesn't count at all since 3 on 3 isn't 5 on 5
But that isn't to say the Flames were "owned", they bent but didn't break against a very good hockey team in their barn

At some point the madness must end. Put Brodie back on his strong side with a guy that can skate or put Engelland up with him on the second pairing.
|
The problem is that then there is a choice between Wideman, Jokipakka, Kulak, and Wotherspoon for the bottom pairing. That's terrible. Gulutzen' options are fairly limited, and I get the sense that everyone in the org. is trying to make the best of it until Wideman's contract expires and the Flames can make a legitimate upgrade on defence this summer.

ES, 5 on 5 is what the majority of people use. Not score adjusted.
Shocking that we are so good at shot suppression (4th) I feel like it's been target practice in a lot of games.

Wideman has to be benched. He is directly responsible for at least one goal every single game.
Gio - Hamilton
Brodie - Engelland
Kulak - Jokipakka
I am hoping March 1st is where they draw the line.
Either Wideman is traded by then or he is benched for the rest of the year if they are unable to offload him.

About two years ago, Wideman was benched and came back without the cobwebs. For a while.
Not sure why benching Wideman seems sacrilegious to GG.

He tweets out the same advanced stat after every game. It gets silly though, because whenever the advanced stat doesn't describe the game, he gives an excuse why.
Pointless.

He benched him early this year. He seems ok with doing it if he needs to.

Hopefully this play sticks around and we don't fall apart like the last time they had a break after a stretch of great play.

You mean like after the all star break where they went 3-1? Including that 5-1 drubbing of the Wild? Flames will be fine.

That was after a streak of bad play. The last time they looked this good they had 3 days off and lost to Tampa and sputtered around .500 beating up on Arizona, Colorado and Vancouver for most of their wins in that time.
That combined with the resurgence after the allstar break makes it seem like breaks seem to have a big effect on this team this year.

I'm going to be at the Monday game just like I was at the Tampa game so yeah, I don't want a repeat. I remember being so hopeful that they would take the streak to 7.

To be fair, they hadn't had a stretch of good play prior to the all-star break. They were coming off an OK win against Ottawa and two terrible performances in Toronto and Montreal.

He has needed to bench Wideman for the last 5 games. He hurts Brodie, the goalies and the team almost every game. As a spectator I cringe everytime he is in the ice. Can you imagine the fear the goaltenders have when he is in front of them. I really like the current team and with Wideman on the sideline I will like it even more especially now that Gully has given up on playing Chiaason on the top two lines.

You could as easily argue Brodie hurt Wideman and the goalie last game. Brodie has the puck, fails to clear by just chucking the puck into traffic. Puck comes back to Brodie who gets checked and rings it behind the net. Wideman is also rushed and fires the puck to Brouwer on the boards, who tries to tip it to Monahan for a fast breakout. Puck in fact tips to the Pen who stepped in front of Monahan, and makes a quick pass, ending up on Brodie's side to an open man, and puck goes in.
That play never happens if the puck is cleared by Brodie. Wideman's pass was a little off, but Brouwer had choices as well. He could tip it out, or do a better job receiving. He tried a fancy, high risk play.
