Haven't looked at it too in depth because my care level is quite low, but Hall must be up there for that title. He won the Memorial Cup two years in a row!

Hall was also named tournament MVP in back-to-back Mem Cups. I know this only because insufferable Oilers fans wouldn't shut up about it.

Taylor Hall is the only player to win the Memorial Cup MVP twice, and we saw how that turned out for the Oilers.

I believe Iginla did as well. I can't be bothered to check how it is either, but I just know he's won more awards than any other player

Sure, but three of those awards include the Bobby Smith Trophy for the OHL’s scholastic player of the year (2x), and the William Hanley Trophy, awarded to the league’s most sportsmanlike player. From where I sit, those accolades utterly pale in comparison to a Memorial Cup or the Stafford Smythe Trophy (MVP).

Taylor Hall is a great player and would probably have a better rep if he played for a respectable organization that surrounded him with decent coaches, defense and managers. Instead he got Eakins freaking out about a water bottle and a GM who thought Schultz was a Norris contender.
That's not Taylor Halls fault

I'm not even sure what the argument is? McDavid is a great player and just because I'm a fans fan doesn't mean I have to rid myself of the reality to that. I would take McDavid on the Flames team in a heart beat

The argument is that his distinction as the most decorated player in OHL history is not especially impressive given that none of those accolades includes a Memorial Cup.
I honestly could care less how good of a player McDavid is or will be; the fact that he plays for the Oilers is more than enough reason for me to deride him at every opportunity. I will continue to do so with extreme prejudice, pleasure, and enthusiasm.

Also the drafted first overall trophy. In terms of awards for on-ice achievement, McDavid is about as decorated as Corey Locke.

Only a couple said Nuge and I was one. Why? Because he has more experience, he's a decent player and he plays a 200 foot game (or at least what passes for one in Edmonton). He doesn't seem to be an ass.
Now, I have no idea about his training ethic, or his in room leadership abilities but I'm prepared to bet they are better than a raw rookie.

Oilers name McDavid captain. Youngest in NHL history

Because McDavid is the future of that organization. He's been "the go to guy" on every team he's been on his entire life. Nugent Hopkins might be their third line center as early as this season. Why give the C to another young player? So you can strip him of it in a year or two and give it to McDavid then? What does Nuge have over McDavid? A few extra years playing on a bottom feeder?
If the oilers made Nugent Hopkins their captain today the entire NHL would be questioning the decision. Instead they named McDavid and the only people questioning it are on a Flames forum

He's obviously the right choice, but the question is why rush naming him the captain? Give it another season, crawl out of the league basement and name him captain next season.
It really does reek of just trying to get that record for youngest captain in league history. Is that record worth heaping more pressure on to this teenagers already crowded plate, I don't think so.
They have seen how this movie plays out before with anointing young players before they are ready. I do think McDavid is different but why risk it. I think this is really about trying to bind him to the organization, so he doesn't sign an offersheet when his entry level deal is up. Kind of like what the nucks did with making Luongo captain.
