With Mackinnon, Schiefelle (sorry if its spelled wrong) and Barkov all signing for under 7 Million and at an average of 7 years, does this set the salary for Monahan? Say a 7x7 or a 7x8?

Hopefully not. I wouldn't like to see Monahan signed for that much.

Guys, I've come up with Monahan's HERO Chart, I hope it helps to project how much he'll make in free agency.

I would like to see something like this but considering he is the highest scorer of the bunch he will probably command more dollars than anyone else.

If MacKinnon is getting 6.3 as the top PPG producer from that class no way Monahan should get 7.

6.5 tops. And 7 or 8 years.

I think thats a bit to high. Since those players are around the same calibre (or a bit better) i think monahan should sign for 6-8 years between 5.5-6.5 million. Anything above that would be a meh contract

Not sure how 7 gets tossed out there when Monahan's comparables are all locked up between 6 and 6.3.

Did Tre strategically drag his feet on this to see what these other guys were going to get for a contract After these signings it's hard to argue that moneyhands should make >7 per

Actually makes a lot of sense. Does Monahan get extra more money just for playing for the Flames? I don't think so.

Monahan doesn't get extra money just for playing for the Flames.. so how exactly then does it make a lot of sense for his contract to be above (or, greater than, aka >) 7m?

Problem for Treliving is Monahan has outscored MacKinnon by 23g and 45pts the last 2 seasons. if a regressing MacKinnon got 6.3 a progressing Monahan could very well get 7. I'm convinced 6.5 will get it done though.

The Flames have a bit of a risk factor involved..... Monahan and Gaudreau are both talented players..... how much was their scoring inflated in playing the Hartley-system... how will they adapt to a more standard NHL style?

Hartley looked at his best players and decided the only chance he had to win with the talent he had was too play a wide open style.

The Hartlley system that was designed specifically for them and Hudler and Gio and Brodie and Russell and Wideman. It was not a team that was going win a lot of loose pucks and score off a cycle.

Will these same players be as far ahead of the rest of the players on the team when they are playing more of a puck possession style or will Bennett-Brouwer-Tkachuk- Backlund-Hamilton move up in the hierarchy?

You take the risk... Especially Johnny. I'd like a long term.

I think if anything, a new style could help them.

Sure, Hartley advocated an open style. But it seemed to me that they had to take the puck 200 feet every time they scored.

If Calgary's possession numbers can improve, they might spend more time in the offensive zone than they have in the past.

But we shall see.

Hartley has got to be the only coach ever to to employ a wide open style to compensate for a lack of talent.

Honestly, I think the switch to a more defensive system is overblown in terms of how much of a drop in production these guys will experience. It will most likely be negated by a functional PP, and then some. The lack of skill was mostly felt in the bottom 6 forwards and the bottom 3 defense. Thinking our skill guys were only being propped up by Hartley is not giving them enough credit.

Not a lack of talent... the talent he had available.

Johnny was on a philly radio show and he mentioned how it is good to play for his country and closer to home . Time to sign him up for 8yrs. Good that no one can give him an offer sheet or you will have Sweeney lining up.

Monahan will likely come in at 6.5 and Gaudreau 7.25.
