Burke: wants a goalie who is good around "home plate" ala Dubnyk. Praises advanced stats to find that type of goalie #Flames
Brandon Byskal @brandonbyskal
Burke: STH renewal rate this year was in the early 90% range. And yes, his tie was untied the whole time #Flames

Honestly from hearing Burke at yesterday's session if i didn't know any better I'd think he was the GM. And that feeling just got amplified reading the statements above about today's session.
Very different from previous sessions where it really seemed like Treliving was in charge and Burke was providing guidance.
Hope it's nothing but really didn't like the sound of all the 'I's in his talk.

That's a significant drop from recent high-90% renewals.

Could be Burke being slightly tricky. Perhaps they never really had a chance to consider Boudreau given how quickly he came off the market.

I see no point in announcing to fans and the media what you are planning to give up in a trade.

I wonder how often Treliving has thought, "I wish this guy would shut his mouth and let me do my job"

Brandon Byskal @brandonbyskal
Burke: said the expansion draft protection format COULD change; only able to protect 6 forwards, 4 defenseman and 1 goalie #Flames #NHL
Brandon Byskal @brandonbyskal
Burke: said there's not one team who wouldn't swap they D corps for ours. Likes the addition of Jokipakka. But I doubt he'd be protected.
Brandon Byskal @brandonbyskal
Burke: said running the 3 goalie system (at times) protected Ortio from waivers. Claimed he's a good backup. Keyword - backup #Flames
Brandon Byskal @brandonbyskal
Burke: reasons why Bob was fired: special teams/in-game adjustments/system. Said special teams needs to be AT LEAST 15th in the NHL #Flames
Brandon Byskal @brandonbyskal
Burke: said Boudreau was a coach that was great with vets; which is why he was not considered. Said Boucher also wasn't considered #Flames

The key is the letting him do his job part. I'd rather work for someone who runs their mouth but allows me to do my job, rather than someone who micromanages every decision.
People also have to keep in mind that Treliving wasn't at the sessions today or yesterday, so Burke was speaking on behalf of the hockey ops department. Every time I've gone to one of these sessions where Burke and Treliving were both present, Burke has let Treliving answer all of those sorts of questions without overstepping him.

That's a pretty disenfranchising thing to say about any player. Not a fan of that kind of commentary. Sure it's an honest POV, and from a Business side of things sure, might work out that way. But who outside of Brodie, Gio and Hamilton is there to protect, seems perfectly legit that Jokipakka could earn the 4th D man slot.

Not to mention what if Jokipakka breaks out and has an unreal year? Might make it a tougher choice, so predicting now is silly.
The no tying tie thing obviously isn't a big deal, but it's weird and ridiculous. I suspect the NHL has some rule about executives wearing ties and so he does this as a stick it to the man kind of thing to comply. It looks ridiculous though.

What's a "home plate" goalie?
As for another post, not surprised flames are looking at trade route for goalie. Not saying Reimer is out of the equation, but he certainly is not plan a or b. If they really wanted Reimer they would have just traded for him last year around the deadline. I can't remember the exact return Toronto got for him, but it was not much.

I don't know if this is the right way to think but the implication of a coach with more structure to me screams boring. And the game is already kinda getting over coached and boring enough.

From how I read that, I believe the "I doubt he'd be protected" part is commentary from the guy tweeting, not Burke.

That's the price of success. It's not the 80's NHL anymore. You have to play with structure if you want to win.

Is Burke making fun of Kevin Lowe here?

Home plate wasn't the goalie type, it was that the league has changed and that everyone drops into protect home plate. if you look at photos from today you got 6-7 players at home plate and the goaltender making a save. Previous years photos you have 1-2 men and a forward.
I was there tonight. That's what Burke said. Although, the free drinks might have effected me.

Also, Burke did not speak to renewal rate. It was the accountant.
