Probably trying to keep the highway from getting too congested in either direction. I have a cousin working up there... she posted a picture of the fire to FB so I assume she's okay, but wondering where she'd be headed.

I think it was due to the fire separating town.

I have a friend in the Suncor camp. They're being told to stay put and they're taking in evacuees.

Probably this week to help with cleanup, but not to fight this fire.

Federal government just tweeted that DND is fully engaged. We have airlift capacity to get a lot of troops and equipment in almost immediately.

I left 20 years ago but it's still home. My Facebook feed is full of updates from many friends who are mostly stuck in gridlock traffic. Feel so damn helpless here. Stay safe up there, everyone.

At this point I don't know what they're going to do unless they have a ton of water bombers. They're well beyond digging firebreaks I would think.
Seems surreal. I was at Suncor when they were a landing strip for water bombers and air support for Slave Lake and other fires around the province in the last few years.
To see that area needing support is tough.

Someone on twitter was saying the air is already saturated with aircraft and that additional air resources won't do anything because of this. Not sure if that's true or not.

I was in Northern BC during last year's fires. At one point, there were over 20 heavy helicopters flying 300 firefighters out of the Chetwynd Airport. Last I heard, there were only 80 firefighters, and 1 heavy helicopter in Fort McMurray. The military could increase that capacity many times in very short order.

Aircraft leaving? Or firefighting?

As of right now, YMM is open only for departures. No flights inbound.

Firefighting aircraft. From what I read there are 9 tankers, 12 helicopters + the one heavy helicopter as Peter mentioned.

My brother just moved there a week or so ago and they have been evacuated north.

Probably an issue with air traffic capacity. They will have closed a massive chunk of airspace around the fire. I bet the province is working on a multi-pronged strategy right now. These things take a lot of time to coordinate.
In 2014, there were hundreds of firefighters from all over the world working in camps across Northern BC. We actually had trouble getting a-hold of larger choppers like the Bell 212s and 214s because the fire service had snapped them all up for water bombing and crew transport.
If it was a manpower issue, the Forces could bring in hundreds of trained personnel very quickly. I think the Globemasters can pack an Iroquois helicopter as well - which is basically like a powered-up 212.

Crazy images and pictures. It's going to suck to see the images when things finally settle down too.
This total (insurance) cost of this is going to be crazy. Has to be more than the floods right?
