Because any of the following players:
Jost
Sergachyev
Brown
Tkachuk
Nylander
Chychrun
Juolevi
Keller
Fabbro
Bean
Rubtsov
McLeod
Could be ranked at 5 on the Flames' internal board. Everything I've listened to or read about this year's draft is that all these players are a matter of preference. The Flames could have a board from 4-8 that goes:
Dubois
Brown
Jost
Tkachuk
and the draft order from 4 to 8 could be:
Tkachuk (Toronto, if they want to have Marner and Nylander down the middle and they love their London Knights)
Chychrun (Edmonton)
Juolevi (Vancouver)
Realistically I'm not expecting to win the Lotto in the first place, there just isn't much probability but I'm eager to find out. Of course I'd be over the moon to win a top 3 pick, and if not, we
1) Don't have to deal with the Oilers getting a fool-proof player like Laine to throw on McDavid's wing . This matters, because it lets them flip a Hall or Eberle for a defenseman to strengthen their team. They're a divisional opponent, their failure is also important to the Flames' success. How long could you hold down a team with McDavid and Laine?
2) Have teams that are known to be prioritizing a defenseman over a forward if they don't get a top 3 pick, letting a guy who might be ranked 4th on our list potentially fall to us. If the draft order is
Toronto
Edmonton
Vancouver
Columbus
Calgary
Sure we pick 5th. But who might get picked at 4? Dubois to the Blue Jackets just traded their 1C away.
So picking 5th isn't necessarily "better" than picking 8th. It depends who picks whom ahead of us.
My preference is still winning a top 3 spot, by far.
