Still don't understand this trade for the Pens. It felt like a hail-Mary attempt, and while it has been working out thus far.... Doesn't Schultz need to be qualified at 4-ish million this summer, otherwise he goes UFA?

If they can re-sign him for a couple years @ around $2M, the trade could be a potential home run for them. Will Schultz do that though with free agency looming?

They won't qualify him and sign him at a cheaper contract. Kind of like what the flames did with Paul Byron last year.

Yeap. So no surprise that when he got to Pittsburgh they took all his matches, lighters and accelerants away.

Does Schultz have ANY bargaining leverage?

I'm not sure he gets an NHL contract unless he really performs well down the stretch and in the playoffs.

What are you talking about? Byron was qualified last Spring and took the team to arbitration.

I think he has no leverage. The Penguins could likely opt not to qualify him, and then sign him as a UFA to a much smaller contract. Even if there are other offers there is no way any of them are close to the $3.9 m he is currently receiving.

There is no conceivable universe where Schultz is given a qualifying offer. No one would pay that for what he has to offer.

He'll be a UFA and if he has any sense or decency he'll sign a fair contract with the quality team that is currently trying to salvage his career.

You are correct, but the other poster is just confusing the summers of 2014 and 2015, what he described happened in 2014.

He's talking about the year before. Byron wasn't qualified and then signed a contract a bit later at a cheaper rate.

I'm more than a little puzzled that he hasn't been given Norris consideration yet.
