I wish the police could issue a 5000 thousand dollar fine for every uttering threat charge. That would likely cease all threats in society.
I'm pretty sure you can go to jail for threatening to kill someone.

It is literally the maximum a player can be fined, actually. Fines are meant to be a slap on the wrist. It's the suspensions that carry the heavy financial penalties.

I'm fine with the fine here.

It was a borderline gesture at best.

Lol, borderline gesture?

In normal society that's called "Uttering Death Threats" which is a criminal offence, no?

Being taped on national TV, making a throat slashing gesture multiple times, taking his time to be sure said target is looking at him and then continues to do it once he has his attention and yelling, not just mouthing the words "you're fu**ing dead!".. Is not borderline.

The NHL is a joke.

Can't wait for reports of kids who view Kadri as their role model/hero, start doing this crap after a hit in their house games. Why not, Kadri does it..

Someone should team him how North South works
I thought he owned up to it and explained it pretty well when he was interviewed - bottom line not that big of a deal...

Really ... you think he was threatening to kill Gio...? Have you played sports - it's not acceptable but it's a VERY long way from what your implying...

Honestly, the pure pleasure I got watching him spend the rest of the game chasing down Gio and failing miserably at hitting him was worth seeing him not suspended. The trash talk he is going to receive for that is punishment enough.

Some of your reactions are so over the top. It's a hockey game. It's not a "death threat" the way some of you are painting it. Anyone who has played contact sport has probably said "oh buddy you're done/you're dead/I'm gonna kill you" or heard someone say Something along those lines at some point . If you've said it, it was implied that you won't actually attempt to murder someone, but just get them back/ hit them. If someone else said that to you, were you leaving the game fearing someone might try to take your life or were you just laughing and probably smiled and said "bring it on"? If this happened in a buffalo Florida game nobody would give a damn. Stop being so dramatic because it involved gio. Hell, gio didn't even care

Fined 0.1219512195% of his salary this year. That'll teach him!

The equivalent, if you made $60,000 annually... would be receiving a $73.17 fine. Inconvenient and maybe a bummer on your weekend... but you'll consider yourself pretty lucky.

Edit: % not shown correctly.

I'm shocked nobody (unless I missed it) has got on their soap box about this being a kid of middle eastern decent doing a throat cutting gesture. It is a strange, strange world where some things are immediately racial and others aren't.

For the record, it has nothing to do with his background whatsoever, I'm just surprised it wasn't brought up that I have seen.

You've also probably heard guys call opposing players fags many times from peewee to the pro ranks. It's a superficial insult just like Kardi's throat slash, but it's something that is no longer acceptable like it once was. Personally, if someone called me a fag while playing sports, it wouldn't bother me in the least, just like the throat slash didn't bug Gio. Gio did mention it was stupid though and it has no place, and he's right.

If the NHL desires to remove these things from the sport, a 1-game suspension is in order. If they don't really care that much, then it's a $5k fine.

He's a decent Middle Easterner, I guess. But I'm pretty glad no one here has cared to make the connection.

Twitter however was all over it.

I actually loled. Jihad Watch? Yes, Kadri is covertly planning to infiltrate the NHL and murder non believers. Gio better renounce his faith quickly and accept allah or risk the wrath of Kadri's fanaticism.

Some people, I tell ya.

You'll want to remove the two zeroes after the decimal point. His fine wasn't $50.

Threatened to kill Gio. Hilariously attempted to kill him (twice) and failed miserably. $5000 fine.

Warning! Suspect math ahead: $4.1M salary = $50,000/game = $2778/minute played (18 minutes average TOI).

So he has to play 1 minute and 45 seconds to pay off this fine... or 2-3 shifts. That'll teach him!

That twitter reply is what I was expecting. I am also glad people didn't go that way. Sadly, I fully expected it.

I'm also refusing to correct my spelling of descent, I had a good laugh at my mistake when I read the bolded part.

The only way you really go to jail for uttering death threats is if you have done something previously.

If its your first offence, my guess would be somethings along the lines of a fine and probation with no criminal record.

The fact that the NHL cannot administer consistent punishment for an act that is displayed repeatedly and identically, is truly astounding.

Here's the act. Here's the punishment.

Try it - it really ins't that hard.

(I don't care what the punishment is: suspension, fine, nothing. Just pick one and stick with it!)
