I'd rather have X odd of winning $1 million than X/10 odd of winning $10 million or X/1000 odds of winning $100 million.

The odds of winning are exactly the same. The odds of sharing your jackpot go up, but with a prize this big, it's still gonna be a good share.
Probably evens out to the smaller prizes when you think about it. Of course, the variance when looking at numbers this big are huge. It could still easily be a 1 person winner. And it could be split 30 ways.

Sorry, not ragging on you, it was just that that particular article got so much attention despite the fact that the claim was completely baseless.

I don't know if it's a majority of people but a shockingly high percentage of Americans are perilously close to financial ruin. I've done a lot of reading on this.

Just to run the numbers by you guys doing the group buy.
Current cash prize is $930M. So take off 30% tax you are down to $651M. Add 40% exchange and you are back up to $911M CDN. Divide that by 27 people and you have about $33M each. While that is nothing to sneeze at, it's well within the ranges that Lotto Max and 6/49 get to. And even though you are buying more tickets, you are 10 times more likely to win Lotto Max and 20 times more likely to win 6/49.
I would also make sure you are all figuring out the contract end of this.

Don't let ken's math trick you, by rounding and approximating he's swindled the 27 of you for a total of over $20M! He's worse than Richard Pryor in Superman III!

Calgarygeologist, if you don't feel like making the drive, let me know. I can easily buy the tickets tomorrow, and put the gas money into more tickets as long as you know an easy way to send money to the US. I guess I guess I'd want a share of the winnings though (just in case!)

Damn it, I'm in! Let me know where to send the money. If anything, it'll be a great story if we win and calgarygeologist 'Demlers' us.
Couldn't stand the thought of CP winning the $1.3 Billion powerball and me not being in on it...
I don't know how people here ensure that we don't get screwed over... Maybe write all of our names on each ticket? Lol.

Meh. 10 of us at work bought $500 worth of tickets. The butt hurt in the US would be absolutely hilarious if a bunch of idiots at a Car dealership in Canada took the prize. All your billions are belong to us!

One CBC they were saying there was some sort of law of bringing the tickets back into the states. It was weird, I didn't entirely understand it, but it's almost like foreigners are allowed to buy, but not redeem. The loophole would be if you left the ticket there with someone who lives there I guess? Maybe you need them to redeem for you? Then of course, you get hit on gift taxes though.

It would be tempting to run off with a billion dollars but I would be more than happy to split the winnings equally as proposed and enjoy my millions.
It would probably be easier to live life as a simple millionaire as opposed to a billionaire any ways.
Without drawing up a lengthy contract at this point you guys have my word that we'll do this equitably. If we somehow manage to win we'll obviously have to draw up a proper contract for distributing funds.
I'll send out a message or email tomorrow with the ticket numbers and a listing of all the parties involved and their share of the pool.
