Bolded comes across as pedantic. These were the shot attempts in the game at ES:
That's not "about even" any way you slice it. Yeah, neither side had many good ones. You could even say the Flames played a solid defensive game. Until you compare with the Ducks who played an elite defensive game. And yeah, it was boring and ugly. But it wasn't even.
If you need a legend:
B - Blocked
M - Missed
S - Shot
G - Goal
Italicized - Very soon after entering the zone (i.e. a rush chance)

Thats an insane amount of blocked shots by the ducks in the high danger area. Maybe the amount isnt insane but the ratio is. Almost all of the high danger attempts were blocked.
Flames 30th ranked power play cost them tonight. Had been better the last couple of games but it has been a season long problem. 5 on 5 play has been great this year and penalty kill is improving too. Long way to go but I hope Treliving can acquire at least one preferably two guys to boost the success of power play. This group of guys aren't good enough.

Lots of giveaways, and not just by Colborne. A couple bad ones by Russell, Granlund had a really bad one, Johnny had some, Backlund had some. Gio had the bad one from behind the net. Hudler, of course.
I thought Hamilton was the best Flame out there. Bennett was OK, but no really good chances (his near miss was a bad angle shot that shouldn't have been as close as it was). Ferland was Ok. Johnny was OK. Brodie was OK. Not as good an effort from Granlund as usual, same with Stajan. Didn't like Backlund or Colborne, and I usually do.
The league has much more impactful things to worry about disciplining right than something as trivial as what Kesler did there. Love the Flames response though, I did think the best take away from this game was how much more physical the Flames were with the Ducks, so that ending was just the topper to that.
Why does it have to be either/or? Discipline is not just about violence. Its about sportsmanship too. Fans dont want to see that crap.
Kesler doesnt even need to chase that puck. Game was over once he cleared it.

It isn't so much that Anaheim neutralized the Flames' offence due to the trap. It is the trap + size that makes it happen.
Anaheim basically clogs up the neutral zone and eliminates the stretch pass + removes time and space for a puck carrier trying to enter the zone. You counter that with gaining the red line and dumping it in, and going hard on the forecheck and trying to create off the cycle. Flames are still an undersized team, and against the Quacks, makes it a difficult task indeed.
They can also make shorter passing plays up through the neutral zone, but these were just continually off all game.
Hat's off to Wideman. Went after Kesler without hesitation. Also, not sure where the panel was coming from - Ferland was right there and was trying to find a partner.
Flames will be fired-up next game against LA, and definitely next game against Anaheim. Anaheim sucks this year, and they just pissed off the Flames who - outside of this game - were playing really good hockey. It is a good time to bet against the Honda Center Curse.

I thought Wideman really struggled out there again tonight. Poor passes, giveaways, pucks getting by him at the point. But him going after and pummelling Kesler was great.
Great game from Hamilton. Getting smarter with the puck, good defensively, and really liking the physical element he had.

Not only I was at the game, we were sitting almost next to the big skirmish at the end of the game. Kesler is an absolute POS player that deserved every punch in the face he's got from Wideman and then some.
Having said that, the game was awful to watch. Broken passes and turnovers, the whole frickin game. Total of 7 shots on goal by Calgary at the end of 2nd period. Seven!!! Unforgiveable. Hartley has no answers against Anaheim, it seems.

Hats off to the Flames though. We went over 1/4 of our home games this year without seeing a loss and set a new franchise record. We had to lose eventually, but this team put together a pretty impressive streak and managed to put themselves back in the playoff race.
Sucks to lose to Kesler the bum but 11 in a row at home is no small feat. They'll start a new streak against the Kings!
He certainly spits, but it looks like just in the direction of the Flames bench but it looks like it occurs a bit before he is really close enough to the bench.
