What do you guys think the odds are of Hiller playing alright when he's healthy? I've been calling for him to go on waivers for the last few days too, but when I stop and think about it, has he played any games since the team in front of him got their act together, aside from when he was sick? Or is he the whipping boy because he hasn't had a chance to redeem himself like Ramo has

Personally if Ramo is healthy enough tomorrow night you throw him in. But I think that you give Hiller another chance during the road trip after a couple of games rest to see how he responds.

Eventually Hiller will get his act together. But it's not been pretty so far.

Jaysus H Murphy, the Flames can't claim Khudobin fast enough. He should be in a Flames jersey before he even knows he was waived.
I'll drive over to Cali and pick him up myself. I can drop off Hiller while I'm there.

So, for the teams that have waiver priority over the Flames:
1. Columbus - Bobrovsky should be back after the Xmas break but they could pick Khudobin up if they decide to move on from McElhinney.
2. Toronto - Really doubtful with Bernier coming back up and Reimer there as well.
3. Buffalo - Lehner should be back mid-January, so it comes down to whether they want to bring Khudobin in to back Lehner up, who is a much better option than Chad Johnson.
4. Oilers - Nilsson is doing fine for them right now after the Talbot attempt failed, so I think they pass.
5. Carolina - Ward and Lack, so they should pass.
So the threats here are probably Columbus and Buffalo but I think if the Flames want him, there's a really good chance they get him.

Does it have to be morning before we find out?
Or if claimed earlier would we know earlier?

Teams have until noon EST tomorrow to submit a claim. There is no advantage for a team to get their claim in earlier. If more than one team submits a claim, the team with higher priority (lower in the standings) will get him. If no one claims him, he'll clear.
Either way, it will be announced at noon EST tomorrow.

I think unless the team with first priority claims him, then we need to wait the full 48 hours because they could still decide to put in a claims at the last minute.
Plus, I think a player is still eligible to play for their current team during the waiver period.

I don't get it? A crappy career backup who turns 30 in 6 months? He had one half decent season playing in Carolina 2 years ago? This is like picking up Scrivens

Worst case scenario it is like Scrivens.... I still don't see the downside since there's no cost to get him, and his contract is up at the end of the year

flames fans saw first hand how bad this guy is. Remember the rebounds in the game against the ducks just a few weeks back??
He got outplayed by Ramo that first period or so....

His age doesn't matter because it's for this year only. And he's been pretty solid his whole career, stats wise. This year he's been red hot and ice cold in Anaheim. 4 games above .960 (including a shutout and a shut door after coming in) and 4 games sub .900 including two quick pulls.
The question isn't if he's a goalie of the future - it's whether he's better than Hiller (or Ramo or Ortio).

When it was 4-3 last game I was thinking how Hiller hasn't been given a fair shake all season. He had a pretty good season last year ( and pretty much every year). I thought for a guy playing with the flu, he was doing pretty well.
As soon as my thought finished, that crappy 4th goal went in, and with that my faith in Hiller went out the window. I've been one of the bigger supporters of him, but it's hard as hell to defend his play now. I think the Flames are trending upwards and will eventually steal a playoff spot. But if/when another slump does happen, it's going to be because our goaltending has gone down the crapper again.
I'm not a fan of Hiller's style, but it's earned him an NHL career over the years and he's been a decent goalie. But for whatever reason the stank of the summer has filtered onto both him and Ramo. Frustrating as hell, as I thought he would be a real solid stop gap until either Ortio or Gillies was ready for a full time job.
Man I miss Kipper.

Have to put a claim in. Hiller is broken, and will not be around next year.
Hiller is just plain scary.

We put a claim in tomorrow he is on the roster. How can we fit him in? We send Granlund back then waive Hiller and bury his $900k in the minors (so yea you can bury some salary like all of Ortio's in the minors). If we claim him Granlund misses tomorrow's game and I guess and can come back when Hiller clears.
I just don't see the point of having 5 crappy goalies on contract with this move. Ortio still has potential but Hiller, Ramo, Khudobin, Poulin is the definition of quantity with no quality. Keep the bums we have and try and upgrade don't add another bum to the roster and have to deal with the 3 goalie issue again (and further push Ortio down the depth chart)

Still, the real question is can he be better with consistent starts than either of the two goalies the Flames currently deploy, I think the answer would be yes.
He's posted a .908 on a Ducks team that has had a comparably worse start than the Flames. Ramo has posted garbage. Hiller even worse so.
Ramo last year:
GP W L T OT SO GA SA SV% GAA MIN
34 15 9 - 3 2 75 852 .912 2.60 1,732
Khudobin last year on a really bad Carolina team:
GP W L T OT SO GA SA SV% GAA MIN
34 8 17 - 6 1 87 874 .900 2.72 1,920
He's even got better #'s this year even though he's only had 8 starts.
Totally worth a shot. I know in my guts that if the two swiched last year, it wouldn't even be close.

Best case scenario, Khudobin catches lighting in a bucket and goes on a hot streak this year, propelling the Flames into the playoffs. Worst case scenario, he doesn't pan out, and Flames lose out on nothing. Right now, Flames are not going to challenge for a playoff spot with Ramo/Hiller. Why not take a chance on something that has zero risk?
