It's his confederate flag t-shirt that bothers me most. Would love to see how long he'd last on the streets of Chicago

Nah, Detroit. It's the most dangerous city in America, based on the FBI's data for 2013. Chicago's crime rate is falling.

See I've always thought that anyone outside of the southern US who wears a Confederate flag or puts it on the truck are even MORE ignorant than those where the flag is actually from. As far as the southern US goes, I don't agree with the tradition argument, I don't agree with the flag, and I'm glad it's finally coming down, but I can understand how people can get swept up in the history of a symbol, especially if they are not educated on it's meaning or use.

However, if you live in Canada and you bond to that flag, I'm sorry, but there is just no excuse for you. I know it's judgmental but the first and probably only thing I will think about you is that you are a willfully ignorant racist and all around not nice person. Who probably has a lot of guns because your penis is small.

A residential program doesn't help when it's people who live there. I have neighbours on one side whose adult son moved in with them. Prior to that, the mom parked in front of her house. Once he moved in, rather than the mom moving her car forward or back a few feet so that both cars could fit in front of their house, she continued to park exactly in front of the path to the door, and then the son would park right in front of my house. He often left his car there for days at a time, without it moving.

I have a garage in the back and usually it's no big deal except when I have elderly visitors who struggle to walks across a slippery street, or the furnace guys are there and need to park close, I want to shovel the snow on the sidewalk, etc.

If there were no other options, I would understand but my street only has houses on one side (it's a small street next to a boulevard and then a main road). There is plenty of room to park across the street. Parking your "extra" vehicle across the street would have been the considerate thing to do, IMO. Failing that, backing up or pulling forward so you don't leave a half spot in front and behind would even be a start.

Yes, it's a public street and he can park there if he wants. Just doesn't seem like the neighbourly thing to do when there are other options.

I remember when I was kid and a huge Guns and Roses fan I saw... I can't remember if it was a music video or a recording of a concert, but anyway it was GnR playing live and Axl Rose had this leather jacket on that had the confederate flag on the back. I had no idea what it was a flag for, other than that I knew it was somehow American and I thought it was so friggin' cool.

Then my brother and I started renting the old Nintendo game North vs. South over and over again and I realized it was associated with the South in the Civil War and I still thought it was cool.

Then I learned about why the war happened and I realized that it wasn't actually cool at all.

Yeah, same thing with Dukes of Hazzard. I've heard the excuse that a lot of people like the flag in Canada cause of that show. But I still find it the weakest of excuses. They were asking some youths at a rock festival, might have been Sasquatch, I forget, and they echoed that hollowed sentiment. However they were alao asked, 'you understand it has to do with slavery and is highly offensive to many black people and minorities,' and every single person said, yeah they had at least an inkling of understanding of that. But it's not what it meant to them.

That there is willful, planned, inexcusable ignorance, and I have zero patience for it. Would I wear a swastika cause I like the geometry or the Volkswagen Beetle?

The guy is wrong legally, and I won't even give him the benefit of the doubt because I think in this case first impressions are completely correct.

That's actually the Confederate Battle Flag that guy is wearing on his t-shirt. The Confederate Flag is different and is the current flag of Georgia. Not as much uproar about that. The Battle Flag was used by the KKK in the 20th Century and thats when it became seen as offensive. Other Civil War symbols are AOK.
Of course Alberta has an element in its flag that did far more dastardly things than the Confederates. Even as recently as 1920 ~1000 Sikhs were massacred by soldiers under that banner.

Regardless of what he looks like or wears I don't see the problem with asking people to not park in front of your house. I didn't read the article, but maybe this was his final straw, his last resort. Maybe he's asked, politely, several times to not park in his spot and others keep doing it.

I know I don't own that strip of asphalt, but I think I have a right to park on it. As a side note I find it funny how you don't own the sidewalk in front of your house but if you want it repaired you have to pay for it...but still don't own it.

I've done it before. Left a note on a person's car asking them to please park in front of their house so I can park in front of mine. No problem they, stopped parking there.

Maybe it's not a huge deal in the spring/summer/fall but if you have to park across the street or away from your house in -30° weather and you can't plug your car in.

I feel like there are two sides arguing different things here.
If you live in a neighborhood where everyone has a driveway, a garage and enough space to park a car in front of their house then the polite thing to do is to use those spaces first. If you live in the beltline and there are more cars than spots it becomes a free for all.

If I absolutely have to park in front of someone's house if I'm visiting a friend I always try to park in the middle of two houses and not directly in front of someone's door. This way you real aren't taking a full spot away from either person.

This is the worst of all arguments.

There is no cut and dry right or wrong.

There is perceived and believed right or wrong.

Yup. I do this as well. In many cases, I'll park down the street away from any houses if I can, so I don't take the spot of someone who lives there. It's basic respect.

Used to have a real pr!ck neighbor that thought he owned the space fronting both of our properties. I didn't need on street parking (neither did he for that matter) but he parked his piece of ##### there. I tolerated the loser until we had a guest over that parked there while he was gone. He actually rang our doorbell and asked for our guest to move. I told him they would be leaving before long. 10 minutes later he rang again. Our guest was in disbelief and left uncomfortably. Thankfully that pr!Ck moved. Public street is just that, people have to respect their neighbors and guests. I always thought there should be parking bylaws limiting on street parking to 24 hours or something. Some people use street as storage for containers on wheels.

I'm afraid I wouldn't have been so polite.

Anyone who can legally use the road has a right to park in front of your house if they want to. So I guess you could say that you have a right to, I have a right to, and every other driver has a right to. Whoever gets there first gets the spot and has the 'right' to it.

But do you have an extra special right to it because the spot's in front of your house? No, you don't.
