Calgary population exceeds 1.2 million

I'm not saying Calgary should be Munich. I like how Munich was able to blend old and new, and that is their new identity.

I think people who are smarter than me could plan future Calgary projects to mix some of the old and new so that Calgary's new identity world-class modern, with a touch of it's Western Heritage roots mixed in. Just put a few hay bales in the concourses of the new rink, and voila.

I think that's the disconnect here. It's not unique. It's not even the biggest part of our heritage. But we ran with it, and we made it awesome and successful and profitable and memorable.

And as such, it is historical now.

Munich is like 700 years old (in the modern sense, perhaps over 1000 before that)? Calgary, not even 150.

One step at a time man. Planning cities is TOUGH. And the best ones go through multiple plans and multiple ages. It's not SimCity.

But again, we don't drive western-themed vehicles here, we drive modern and new cars and people are always looking for the latest models. Similarly, why does our architecture have to keep going to the past for inspiration? There's nothing architecturally significant about that western era. If you want western-inspired buildings, go to Heritage Park. We don't need to make the entire city look and feel like that.

Do you think anyone will be complaining that there isn't any awesome architecture from the 60's, with it's modernist blocks and efficient floor plans? But man they sure as hell might miss cool 50's diners or signs.

It's tough to plan what to preserve and what to replace.

No one knows. That's my point. so why does everyone get so bent outta shape about it?

Doubtful, unless some rancher goes Hitler, our Stampede will ever be looked at as a joke. Sure it may fade. But it'll never be a joke.

It's nice when it's lit up.

That's what I don't get about the Stampede hate. Because it's not completely historically accurate? Jeez, look at other worldwide festivals. Not only are most not completely historically accurate, but some of them come from very dark places. Your a smart guy. I know you could come up with three examples before I could come up with one.

Haha, not the first time I've been accused of being no fun. I don't know. I am a bit of a pretentious snob.

Anyway, I like Stampede. Its good old fashioned drunken fun. I just don't like how it sometimes seems to dominate the rest of Calgary's culture (although thankfully that does appear to be changing with the death of Stampitecture etc.)

Have you attended a game there?

The Portland Timbers have a better stadium. You know, a converted baseball stadium sandwiched against a warehouse provides a better atmosphere than the modern, super expensive stadium of one of Europe's biggest, most successful clubs.

We are digressing. But I hope our new stadium doesn't end up like Allianz.

Seriously though. It's pretty pathetic that Canada has maybe one world class stadium in BC Place (Skydome is out dated).

Lets hope Calgary now having 1.2 million people ushers in a new era of interesting architecture.

I actually really like BC Place. I always have a great time watching Whitecaps games there. I also don't have a problem with its concrete look; it's not ideal, but it's not littered with sports graphics and visual eyesores everywhere either.

It's pretty much exactly the same as the National Stadium in Warsaw except the roof lights up instead of the sides.
