Lomberg apparently has an interesting background story. Was suspended for 3 semesters for allegedly knocking down a guy and kicking him in the face. Claims it was self defense.

Went back to the USHL last season because he wanted to transfer to another school (NCAA rules state a player must sit out a year to transfer to another school)

That Michael Kirkpatrick could be an interesting story. Not a lot of players have played that many years in the CIS and still move onto the AHL.

So if last night was any indication, Kulak's going to be pretty awesome this season. This Stockton defense is going to be out of this world.

Kulak
Morrison
Culkin
Nakladal
Wotherspoon
There may not be any easily defined separation between those guys. Any of them could see NHL time and third pairing AHL time.

I'm almost positive it will mandated from above that Wotherspoon and Nakladal get ample playing time because they'll be the first call-ups if one of the Flames defencemen go down.
Morrison and Culkin are the PP specialists without a doubt, although Wotherspoon developed quite the cannon out of nowhere last season. If last night was any indication, Kulak will see a lot of playing time as well.
Wouldn't surprise me to see Nakladal-Wotherspoon, Culkin-Kulak as the top-4. Morrison is still a rookie, so he should be treated like one at least to start the season. Him on the bottom pairing with Sieloff would work nicely.

i think Stevenson will get a lot of time as well. I think you see Kulak, Stevenson, Sieloff and Kanzig rotate in and out of the lineup. I think Morrison will be an everyday guy.

I still think Kanzig starts in Adirondack. He really needs to for his own development. I completely forgot about Stevenson. He has A LOT of Huska's trust, so you could be right.
That's not counting potential PTO's like Fram.

Few updates since I last posted one of these.
15 forwards and 8 D-men.
Keeping in mind that there are 17 forwards and 7 D-men with NHL contracts battling for spots in Calgary who aren't listed here. There is also Ryan Wilson on a PTO.
Lots of competition everywhere.

If history means anything the Heat are going to carry 8-9 defensemen too. So at this point until more guys get signed I see Kanzig starting in the AHL platooning like Kulak did last year.

Culkin out 6-8 weeks with shoulder injury, per Huska.

Not to be dramatic, but that's pretty devastating. He had a chance to play with the big team at the end of last year and he severely injured his wrist. He looked good enough in the last couple games to spend a good amount of time in Flames camp and now will miss that and the start of the AHL season. The kid can't catch a break.
I'll really be interested to see how he comes back essentially missing 5 months of hockey at a pro level.

Went to STFX with the guy. Was always a difference maker on the ice, and from my buddies on the team heard he was a great locker room guy as well. I really hope he is able to make some noise in Stockton. Best of luck to ya Kirkpatrick! <20[X]14>

Reason: just realized no body will understand that last little part... chalk it up to school pride?

Trevor Gillies has signed with South Carolina in the ECHL.
Hopefully last time we see him in the Flames organization.

So apparently the Flames brass signed Aaron Johnson to an AHL contract.
My bet is the Heat just got their captain with that signing. He's played 70+ games in the AHL in each of the last two seasons, and captained first Hartford in 2013/14 and then Binghamton in 2014/15.
Solid signing IMO.
He should be a solid leader for the young Dmen we have down there, but will be able to contribute a lot more on the ice than Yonkman did as captain last year.

I was just about to post that. Eurohockey has him on their transfers page as signing with Stockton.
He is a solid AHL player for sure. He creates some good competition on the farm.

I've always been a fan of Aaron Johnson. Love his style of play. I hated when we traded him for Steve friggin' Staios.
