Duhatschek, on the Fan960, suggested a front loaded 7 year deal with an AAV of ~$7M; starting around $10-12M for the 1st season, down to $4-5M for the last
edit: he also throws out a suggested 5 year, $9M AAV
One problem we have is cap space now but no cap space in the future. This is oppisite of many teams signing veteran free agents to extend their window.
So if Gio had the option of a 3yr 27-30 mil deal. Would he take it over a 6 yr 7.5. To break even he would need to be able to get about 5 mil 3yr deal after which is probably on the low end of what he'd get barring injury. I could see something short like that being worked out and then you could pay him 15 mil the first followed by 2 7.5s maximizing his time value of money.
I would consider trading Giordano, everything about the guy seems to be true in terms of his skill level, leadership and dedecation but his age is starting to work against him and he is injury prone. Now might be the time....

Go away.

It's true, he has had a serious injury (both requiring surgery) the last 2 years that has kept him out for long periods of time. Why would you sign an aging d man that is injury prone to a huge term contract. Trade im now when his value is high......Gardiner plus a 2nd or 3rd rounder, Gio goes home to TO and our back end does not skip a beat.

Gio for Gardiner+2nd OR a 3rd??? Oh, how generous. Better trade him now while "his value is high", wouldn't want to miss out on the chance to add Justin Schultz ver 2.0 and a 20% shot at a player who plays 200 games... all for the low price of our captain and best player. Where do we sign?

Look at the contracts as well as the age difference and playing style similarities.
Anyone that is taking on Gio is looking down the barrel of a long term big $ deal. Gardiner not so much...at least not yet.
It's not a bad deal taking all of it into consideration.
Well, I think you would agree that the Flames have plenty of experience going long on aging players ("the core") and that did not work out to well.
Look....I'm just saying that the guy is injury prone (fact), he is aging (fact) and his value has never been higher (fact). Maybe he is worth more maybe less....it's not personal, it's business.
I love Giordano, but his age and injury history is a huge concern. How many Defenceman are still high level players at the age of 35 or older? Than look at the injury history of those guys. Nik Lidstrom missed like 15 games in his career and many of those were rest day scratches.
So yeah if the contract is more than 4 years I would really start wanting to get that cap number down.
