I personally think rating younger players sooner will help and would be the one change I would be on board for.

^^^ agree, rate them sooner and put a cap on the ratings that can stay in the ECHL. Once a player is rated above X he has to be signed.

There are definitely some great suggestions throughout this thread and I am sure we will looking and implementing a few changes that can help the league.

However what Doug is saying and has been mentioned by a few people throughout the thread. You get out of it what you put into it. When I took over my team I was last in the league with 50pts, no draft picks and an aging core. I traded and traded and traded. I lost a trade so I could win the next and as long as I at lest broke even on the series of trades I was happy. The goal was to win each trade by a little and keep flipping assets over and over. It was very rare if not unheard of for a player to spend a whole season on my roster. I flipped everyone where I saw value in the deals. Some guys I dealt for 3-4 times in the same season. On top of trades I was scouring every major junior league in canada, NCAA and Europe and taking a chance on every guy with potential. As my team became an asset rich team. I stopped doing this, but it appears that a lot of weaker teams still aren't doing this.
To build fast you can't be emotional attached to any players, you have to be constantly trying to improve. Sometimes you have to realize to make your team better you have to lose a trade so you can win the next.

My observations are there are there needs to be a few changes but the only way we find complete parity is if all 30 GMs are close to the same work rate and ability. Is that going to happen after the changes are made? Personally I doubt it. Some GMs will put in a lot of effort, others won't and we will see the same type of thing again.

If you look at the salary cap in the NHL, it helped to make things a little more fair for all teams, but there are still teams that couldn't find their own ass with both hands and a flashlight like Edmonton.

Anything that is done to help the competitive balance here will make things a little more balanced, but teams with good GM's will be better than those that don't.

Definitely one of the lower asset teams. When I took over Edmonton they were pretty barren. The 2 year before ELC's would be a good place to start.

It is a very mature league and the great GM's would all of a sudden have to suck before they'd come back down to the middle of the pack. I don't know how to fix the problem. All I can offer is what my mindset is like when trying to make trades.

I know we're still in the bottom 10 by the chart and I feel that is accurate. I know that my patience has paid off in helping build Edmonton's assets up. I've done OK drafting in the 1st round too. Basically I took over a very asset poor team in Edmonton. I've done well in most trades. I haven't made a lot of trades because I can't afford to lose a trade, just can't. I have no shame, I've pretty much begged, lol. I've negotiated with some of the more asset rich teams and flat out said, look Edmonton has no assets I need to get a win in order to do this trade. I haven't done that in awhile, but a lot of my early trade talks were on the premise that I got to win the trade because Edmonton has very few players of value. Due to being on the lower end of assets, and not being able to afford losing a trade it is sometimes better asset management to not make a trade and hope my assets increase in value.

Just like last year, this year I'll be patient on the deadline and not pick up any rentals for a playoff push. I just can't afford to waste anything on a rental or complete a "win now" trade. I have the young pieces to trade for a vet to help me right now but in the long run it makes my team poorer asset wise. Realistically I'm first round fodder anyways IF we do make the playoffs.

Earlier in the year I was spending time looking for Free Agent finds, but man people are all over that. It is hard to find someone who hasn't been found yet, haha. Admittedly I haven't searched for unsigned players in awhile. I should make a more concentrated effort on PoW and PoM.
