The Russians used to tell this joke back in the 1960s, when the country went through massive crop failures due to bad Soviet agriculture:
‘Khrushchev is a miracle-worker. He's the first man ever to plant wheat in Kazakhstan and harvest it in Saskatchewan.’
In the same vein, Lowe and MacTavish are geniuses. They've been building something special up in Edmonton for years: a close-knit, fast-skating, high-octane offensive team that works like crazy and excites the fans every night, just like in the glory days of the 80s. But as it turns out, it's the Calgary Flames.

Apologize if this came up before, but are the Senator's Hoffman and Stone rookies? On the nhl page stats, they are listed and are 3rd and 4th in rookie scoring. Thanks.

The only thing better than Gaudreau winning the Calder would be if Glenn Healy had to present him the trophy

Yup, Ottawa's got a pretty nice group of young players. Could see them taking off next year should they fall short of the playoffs this year.

I think you answered your own question.
Only 29 total games for Hoffman and 23 total for Stone prior to this season
Less than 25 games in a single season, check.
Under 26, check.
Less than 2 seasons with 6 or more games, check (I think this is a new definition?)
They are rookies.

It would be excellent to use a different phrase to describe a player as special as Gaudreau indeed is.

this, I've heard the "something special" a few times lately from sports panels referring to the Flames and it just reminds me of the stench that is the grease.

He should absolutely win -- not just for the points but for how he gets them. He's an electric player and you feel like anything can happen when the puck is on his stick. And it often does.
Granted I don't think I've watched a single Predators or Panthers game this year, so I'm a bit biased.

It also keeps the goalies honest, they all seem to be expecting it now and it prevents them from cheating on the cross ice passes, damned if you do damned if you don't scenario really

Isn't it about time someone brings up Gaudreau's NHLE again?
It's projecting pretty darn close, iirc.

I think it was 67 IIRC. 65 - 67 anyway, something in that range.
He is now on pace for 23G 41A 64P

MacKinnon had 63 last year
Skinner had 63 in 2010/11
They were the most since Kane had 72 in 2007/08

Johnny is really starting to come on. I wouldn't be surprised if he hits that. Another dman who has had a terrific rookie season is Klingberg in Dallas (36 points in 53 GP, and playing about 22 minutes per game). 4 years older than Ekblad of course but great point production regardless.

#CalderWatch:
- Johnny Hockey has passed Filip Forsberg in pts per gm for rookies; 0.791 Vs 0.768
- Part Deux: Gaudreau trending up w/ 9 Pts in last 6GP; Forsberg has just 1 Pt in last 6GP; 2P/11GP

I don't mind the phrase "something special" when it comes to Gaudreau, because its true.
JG has been "something special" all season for the Flames but over this last 9 games, after a bit of a slow down and what appeared to him getting tired, he has really turned this last 9 into "something special".
The way he us getting his points, being so dynamic and also turning into a clutch player truly is " something special".
