The thing is- Calgary seems to be the exception in Canada with respect to pedestrians. In Winnipeg we would J-walk across Portage ave (similar to MacLeod Trail) lane by lane. If somebody were to slow down, it messes with the timing and we'd have to go back.

People slowing down for j-walkers just serves to enable them, and encourage them to continue. It also can mess up the person trying to cross. I'm not saying to go ahead and hit them, but also don't cater to them.

Jay walkers deserve to live too so I would slow down for them. But there are reasons that slowing down for Jay walkers as a courtersy is actually dangerous to them.

First if the right hand lane car stops, they will be blocking the the left hand lane car which may or may not know there's a jay walker crossing.

Second, jay walkers can time the flow of the car as long as they can see them, if some cars stop and some don't, it's more dangerous to them too.

I'm not saying we should run people down intentionally but many times, drive on thru without stopping could actually be the safe thing to do for jaywalkers. And I know this from my many jaywalking experiences.

Just have undercover cops waiting on either end and start handing out tickets. They can take a couple of the hundreds of police officers handing out speeding tickets every day and assign them to stop jay walkers.

How come the bridge didn't get built with stairs?

I also find it odd that there are no stairs.

You can blame fiscal restraint and wanting to stay on budget.

But the cost of the bridge is higher that expected. That means in order to stay within budget, the city is sacrificing the stairs that were originally planned and is going with access ramps only.
They may be added in the future.

What is it in this city with pedestrians in general where they have two speeds; a normal pace when walking on a sidewalk and then slow pace for crosswalks? I always kick it up a notch when I'm walking through a crosswalk and I can see a bunch of cars backed up waiting for me but it seems like the majority of pedestrians walk even slower through them as if they are sticking it to the drivers. I realize it goes both was and some drivers are not very considerate at all but it's hard to feel sorry for pedestrians when they are just as inconsiderate as drivers.
