Haha, this was the most depressing thread in a while to read late in the day from start to finish.

Three awesome call-ups, lots of excitement in the thread about tomorrow night, which in turn had me pumped to see 2 or 3 of them play....then get near the end and just a casual post with a Bob Hartley quote saying "Yeah, none of them are playing tomorrow".

Still awesome they got the call-ups, but I sure went from super excited to meh from beginning to end.

I know we all want to see the new toys, but I'd rather see them succeed. So if Hartley thinks they need another practice or more and watching the game from above to be ready, I'd rather they do that than be thrown into the deep end.

Yeah, I wasn't questioning Hartley's expertise or decision, it was simply a synopsis of my emotional highs and lows of reading this thread, lol.

I would argue Sven likely isn't being thrown into the deep end by being inserted directly into the line-up after being called up, he's been up and down a bunch of times now over his career.

Agreed on Wolf and to a lesser extent Wotherspoon (who played a few games last year and was recently up here watching from the pressbox this season), though.

For the record, I would try:
Gaudreau - Backlund - Hudler
Baertschi - Monahan - Colborne
Bouma - Jooris - Jones
Wolf - Stajan - Bollig (Byron is ok too)

Giordano - Brodie
Russell - Wideman
Diaz - Wotherspoon

I like the look of those lines. Would almost want hudler on a line with Monahan and baertschi to keep him rolling with some offence. But I would be fine with colborne there instead.

A reason Potter may not have been called up is his waiver eligibility.

Once a player has cleared waivers, which Potter did months ago, they don't have to clear waivers again to be sent down unless he is on the NHL roster for 30 days or plays 10 NHL games.

By my count Potter has already used up 24 out of his 30 days, and perhaps the Flames feel that Wotherspoon will be up for more than 6 days.

While it may feel silly to Flames fans to worry about losing Potter on waivers, it is something I think Treliving is perhaps concerned with. This theory is supported by the fact that Potter was sent down to Adirondack during the Christmas break than immediately called back up when the break ended in perhaps an effort to buy more time on Potter's waiver ineligibility.

IMO, he would be better off with Engelland. Wotherspoon is very good moving the puck so he doesn't need Diaz' help there and that is pretty much Diaz' best attribute. Engelland is better defensively, and will cover in front of the net, allowing Wotherspoon to be the more mobile partner. Also, Engelland's physicality would help ensure some space for Wotherspoon.

I am super pumped to see THE WOLF play. Pretty sad EH? Guy with 3rd line upside I wanna see lol! 2004 Cup run ( were a long way from that at the moment ) we had a crazy guy named Oliwa, and a pest The Villian. Guys like Donovan and Nilson on the third line (speed). Maybe we can rekindle the past with Jooris Granlund and Wolf lol. OK back to reality!

Wolf plays a hard physical game, always. Has some offense to his game too. We need more of that on this team. Maybe he could ignite Bollig, turn him into the player we traded for.

No matter how this turns out Wolf earned the call up. We need to see what he has. Good or bad! Contract expires at the end of the season.

Nice to see Sven get a call up. I like Sven, but think Poirier deserved it more. Yet I also believe when Poirier is called up he stays with the team forever.

As for Wotherspoon? I feel for the guy. He is NHL ready and I have more confidence in him that Diaz Engelland or Smid by alot. I think the kid could get so much better playing and watching Brodie and Gio. I do not beleive he is being hurt though logging big minutes in the minors.

I loved the call ups. Ortio deserved another call up too. Yet to be fair he pretty much has a gauranteed call up for all of next season. One way contract at NHL pay next year. He will get his shot.

Remember during training camp when some fans were worried that the kids wouldn't get a chance to play on this team?

It does totally suck that he is terrible right now but I think he needs more time....he could still pull it out of the crapper.

Maybe the All-Star break will help.

It would hurt the Heat, but their top pairing is better than our bottom pairing.

I would like to see Ortio play further out of his net and cut down angles before I give him a one-way contract. I don't think it will take long for the league to figure out that Ortio goes down early and stays deep in his net. In fact, I think the game in Anaheim was an example of that being exploited. I'm sure it's a comfort thing for Ortio more than anything, but it is key to him surviving in the NHL.

Isn't Wolf an RFA after this season? Have been pretty disappointed with Bolig this season. A bottom six that includes Wolf, Ferland, Bouma, Arnold, Shore and Byron (for speed) sounds good to me.

Too late he already has one-way contract for next season.

I agree with what you're saying about Ortio and his angles, but I just wanted to point out that he already has a one-way contract next year.

Manfred Wolf isn’t too proud to admit seeing his son on a National Hockey League sheet of ice for the first time on a regular-season NHL game night moistened the tear ducts.

“Yeah,’’ he says, “you aren’t human if you don’t tear up, just a little.’’

And that was only for warm-up.

Imagine the flood of emotions when David Wolf actually finds himself in a game
Quote:
“Am I proud? Obviously, that’s a no-brainer. That’s the best league in the world. He’s worked awfully hard to get this opportunity. I told him the other day when he was set up from Adirondack ‘You know, David, whether you play or don’t play, it doesn’t really matter to me because you’ve gotten to where you are on your work ethic and your desire to improve.’

“That’s what makes you proud as a dad. That’s worth a lot to me.

“I don’t know if he’ll even get to play on this call-up. We’ll see. But that won’t stop him. He’s a pretty determined young man.

“The Flames organization, the coaches, management, the people in Adirondack, have all shown a lot of faith in him. And when he does get his chance — whenever that might be — I know he won’t let them down.’’

Why make recalls and sit them in the press box? I have never understood this, nothing like bringing up a hot hand to let them get cold prior to receiving ice time.
