True, but I am wondering if they got 2-300,000 signatures if they would listen.

Online petitions aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

If the Flames Jersey's had Scotia Bank Shoulder Logos would you stop supporting the flames? Would you stop attending games or watching them on TV? Would people at games stop buying concessions? I would imagine the resounding answer to those questions would be no.
Would they lose some Jersey sales? Possibly.
Would that loss in Jersey sale revenue be greater than the gain from the sponsorship revenue? Very unlikely.
I am not saying I think this is a great idea but I am saying it makes a lot of sense from a financial standpoint.

I haven't brought a Flames home jersey simply because of the flags. If the ads don't clash with the design much, I would gladly purchase one (also jersey-being-a-modern-day-retro-design-plug).

I'm not sure a guy paid like Engelland wants "You're richer than you think" coming to people's minds.

While it is possible to create real brand damage, or tarnish a product, that only actually happens if people no longer consume the product because of what happened.
At most in a forum of passionate hockey fans, we've heard "I'll never buy a jersey" if this happens. Even of those that are saying that, 0 chance all of them stick to it, some will cave, the rest who have opinions up the middle or even say they don't care will also almost certainly cave and buy jerseys (if they do now), and young people won't know any better.
Given that, and given that unless I missed it, I haven't even heard one person say they'll stop watching hockey because of this, I'm having a hard time agreeing with the "brand damage" and tarnished arguments. Those are only real things if it costs the businesses clients and money.
|
This is your opinion though, if they keep pushing more and more ads I'll definitely be less inclined to watch hockey. If it feels too much like a product and less of a game of passion it is less fun to watch because the players seem like assets and less like people. I try to get my friends to watch and they openly mock how many ads there already are so I end up watching games on my own a lot.
Maybe you're in favor of the ad revenues but don't assume that everyone feels the same way as you.

I don't know that I'm in favour or not in favour of ad revenues for the league. Don't assume just because I can see the business logic behind that I love it. On one hand, I'd prefer they leave my jersey alone, it's much nicer with out a corporate logo. On the other hand, if it helps the Flames make more money, remain sustainable in Calgary and help them deliver a better product, then I'm open to it.
I also agree, they can eventually cross a line with this type of stuff that does hurt business as you say. I'm just having a tough timing thinking this is going to be it, and it has proven to work in other sports. but only time will tell, but all I'm saying from a logical point of view, I can UNDERSTAND (not necessarily get exicited about) why the NHL is going this way, it seems pretty low risk at the moment and if I was in their shoes running a business, I'd probably be doing the same thing.

I can't recall - was there an outcry over ads on the boards? Too distracting?

To me, if it is done "tastefully" - I mean color-coordinated (no green on red, etc) logos which blends in well with the jersey, then it shouldn't be too bad. Yeah, I know there will be compromises, but with $100million+ per season I think the compromises will be made.
To the people saying that F*** soccer as they are influencing/ruining hockey, too bad, obviously the NHL is following suit...
I foresee that a giant global corporation (Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Microsoft, etc.) will take over jersey sponsorship for the whole league, and all teams will have the same logos, etc.
For digital ads on the boards, are we going to get the LED panels similar to soccer and football games? It will be cool if they can be incorporated into the boards..

I think the people all saying that it's inevitable, it'll make money, people will get used to it, etc.- yes I actually do completely agree with you.
I guess I just feel that it's too bad that absolutely everything about the NHL has to be about money.

Make sure to continue your rhetoric that all of us are going to be buying jerseys, when the number of people saying they won't continues to rise. Never move off of your position, even if it's ridiculous.

I can unequivocally say I will never buy a Flames jersey with a logo on it. Ever. For all the BSing and marketing initiatives these teams have about creating a brand it seems counter-productive to slap a scotia bank logo on the sweaters. It's soulless, more so than anything I can think about in sports.
I find soccer jerseys ridiculous, why would I pay 60 bucks for a blue shirt that says samsung on it.

This website is hilarious. Who cares about ads on the jerseys. It's hockey not a fashion show.

I remember there was a huge debate when the blue Alberta patch first being slapped on the jersey. People here were saying that it totally ruin the look and no one will ever buy them. It's like what, 7 or 8 years now. I now see a huge majority of people at the dome are wearing that. What I am trying to say is that with time people will get used to it.
For a soccer jersey, if the sponsor logo is not included on the fan's version (like a Chelsea shirt without Samsung or an Arsenal shirt without the Emirates), it seems like there is something missing, something not authentic.

It's just completely unnecessary this isn't the CFL. It should at least be a team by team basis, I don't care if Nashville needs the 4 million so badly that they put the GoodYear tire logo on their jerseys, but 4 million should be peanuts to the Flames and exempt us from awful corporate jerseys.
