I see it as a good thing. At least if people are realizing that they're having to tread more carefully, there is hope. My concerns would be with the people who don't recognize that their past behavior or posting style was possibly untowards.
I do find it quite interesting that the first person in the thread to say that people were overreacting and acting offended was actually the first person to act offended and overreact accordingly.
I'll admit my reaction was aimed more at the article, the thread title and the whole notion that the F&I girls are "sexist" or whatever and not anything anyone said here. Clearly I wasn't the only one with that reaction.
My dig at the forum was more addressed at the fact that these threads are popping up daily. It's like we're consciously making an effort to turn the off topic forum into the PC discussion forum. If any topic on here deserves an "Ongoing" thread it should be the "Ongoing Look at How Not Politically Correct These People Are" thread...
Advertising on forums and advertising on a regular site with the same traffic is like comparing apples and dishwashers. Sure a forum generates lots of hits, but it's the same small group of people over and over.
He's not telling all CP members we don't need them, he's telling one CP member that can't understand he's walking uninvited into someone else's house and complaining about the carpet. I would say and Bingo I'm sure would agree, that we don't want posters who can't abide by the rules without complaining about them.
*more laughter*
Incorrect premises lead to incorrect conclusions. Search all the threads in the mod area discussing rule changes, and you'll never find any of them concerned one iota with trying to change the rules to increase increase revenue. Bingo's not ever handed down a directive to change how things are done to serve driving revenue.
I can say for certain that the narrative you've imagined it isn't true. Or are you saying I'm lying?
Well your feelings are wrong. All the discussions about any rule changes and policy changes involved people who get exactly $0. The mods and admins are all volunteers who do it because they see value in the site and community.
Define huge. $5 a month on Dreamhost isn't going to cut it...
Well nothing you say with respect to the revenue of the forum holds any wight unless you open up the books; that's assuming you've ever seen them and are not talking out of your you know what. With that said, I don't think it needs to be made public, I'm just not going to believe you at face value without evidence.
With respect to you talking about me saying you are lying, how could I have possibly have said or even implied you are lying when I have no idea who you are and never addressed you prior to this post? Speaking of imagining things.
I have no issue with how things are run here, I'm just offering a perspective that members may wish to consider or keep in mind as the direction of CP changes and changes are made.
I don't believe much of your mod jibber jabber with respect to the motivation behind decisions and the true revenue of the site and I'm not required to in order to be a member or to enjoy the CP community just like you don't have to give a rats butt about anything I say nor do you need to address it. With that in mind, I don't think you're lying either, I don't care one way or the other, I'm just skeptical.
I follow the rules and I enjoy the site but I think it's certainly within the realm of possibility that the new direction of the forum and revenue are tied together.

I just quickly looked at the first three pages of the OT forum, and only two thread titles (out of 90) even come close to fitting that description: this one, and the one about Pat Robertson.

Yeah, I think you more-than-likely just misfired, which was funny to see in retrospect considering you almost single-handedly CAUSED the PC/not PC discussion.
I'm in agreement mostly. I think some people dip too far into the "this is not appropriate" kind of thing and come up with some pretty unique examples of such, but I don't think it's a large group, and I definitely don't think it's tied to the way CP is currently doing business as a whole. The only people that have had to be careful are those that were well over the line previously, otherwise I haven't seen any substantial change over the way conversations go.

This is honestly the craziest thing I have read on this forum in a while. The real reason for the forum being more accommodating to female posters is for the big advertising dollars?

I didn't say you were saying I am lying, I said that your imaginations were not true, then asked if you are saying I'm lying (meaning that saying your imaginations are untrue was a lie). I wasn't talking about any prior posts.

No, but saying I'm lying is probably a great way to stop being able to enjoy the CP community.

I do have to care about things you say, they may impact the forum.
I may not have to care about what you think, but I do care when imaginary (and frankly insulting) motives and actions are attributed to me and the moderation team. Why would we want to have a poster that insults us?

If being within the realm of possibility is all that's required to formulate your beliefs, I've got a bridge to sell to you.

Except that there are jobs where being attractive is part of the qualifications. The Fire and Ice girls are essentially promo models. Good looking people sell products better as people are drawn to them.
It's human nature for people to want to look at good looking people. I don't get why we should feel guilty about it? Jeeze I'd HATE to live in the world the PC people envision.
I would say that there is something fundamentally wrong with societies use of attractive people to sell products. That why I think the fight isn't with the fire and ice girls its the entire advertising industry and isn't a gender based one
Its really a human instinct problem and how we judge some people to be worth more than others based on appearance. A genetic trait really but one that we can work to over come.
How just do you think it costs to purchase a server, bandwidth and coloc fees
I know that when I started up my Stamps site, we went as hosted and outserviced as possible and its not cheap to get a good web hosting service that won't crash when two people like onto your site. On top of that the software costs for the forum stuff weren't cheap.
I can't imagine ever wanting to go out and buy all of that stuff and then manage it myself.

Shifting business values towards specific demographics in order to earn addition revenue by capturing another part of the market is the craziest thing you've read on this forum in a long time? I'm convinced you aren't reading the forum my friend :P
